Canon HG10 HD Camcorder - Feedback on use with iMovie 08

Has anyone purchased the Canon HG10 Camcorder? And if so, are you using this with iMovie 08? I'm very interested in this camcorder and would like to know how well it functions with iMovie as the source for video edit and creation?
Thanks

Have been using my new HG10 with iMovie for the past two weeks and the interaction is seamless and excellent. I have no experience with prior versions of iMovie, so '08 is the only thing I know and it is great for me so far.

I purchased the HG10 about a month ago. Very pleased. Easy to use. Easy to import (just update all software first). iMovie'08 is quite easy to use & have heard many complaints about it, but I think it was built for ease. I have made a couple of simple movies about our 5 week old daughter & they have looked great.
cheers

How long does it take iMovie 08 to import 60 minutes of AVCHD footage?
This month's Mac Life magazine has a review of the Panasonic HDC-SD1 which is also an AVCHD camcorder. They state it took iMovie 08 60 minutes to transfer 40 minutes of footage. An then it took iMovie 08 another 45 minutes to convert that footage to the Apple intermediate codec. This was on a 2.2ghz MacBook Pro.
Thanks.

Does it matter if the Mac is a PowerPC or Intel processor with this camera?

You need an intel mac to import AVCHD directly to imovie, however you could always use Voltaic to convert your AVCHD on your G5.

I'm a new HG 10 user with a Mac G5 and using Voltaic very successfully - converting to Quicktime and then into iMovie06 & 08 and Final Cut Express. Takes a little extra time but its worth it. My other option was to use the supplied software on my reasonably powerful Dell Laptop but can't face the ugly and confusing interface!

I've purchased the HG10 and I must say I'm very pleased with the camera and it's integration with iMovie08.....it's very easy to download video to iMovie08 and the camcorder itself is easy to use. The quality of playback is very good - better than your typical HD camcorder. I'm integrating all of my home video to iTunes and then convert to AppleTV for playback on my flat screen - I'm very impressed with the results to date. Although I realize that I'm not getting HD playback by this method - it's fine for me at this time.

Mac G5 DualCore 2.0
I wanted to clarify: Your mac type above states "dual core", isn't this the Intel based chip for the G5, not the PowerPC...? or was this in error? I ask since I have a G5 PowerPC, which is cause for the issues, I bought a HG10 Canon and I have a G5 PowerPC, wanted to confirm w certainity that Voltaic works w a G5 PowerPC Many thanks.

I sent a msg also prior, but did want any info you have on Voltaic and how well it works with a G5/PowerPC, I have a Canon HG10, but may return it for a HV20 if this is too problematic, many thanks

G Warrior . . sounds like you are in a similar boat as I. I have a G5 PowerPC and purchased an HG10. I also purchased a registration key from the Voltaic people and downloaded the program. True to form, Voltaic worked just as advertised but I still was not satisfied because of the length of time it takes Voltaic to do a conversion. Here is a quote from their website:
"How long does the conversion take?
This depends on your machine, but as a guide, on a 2.0 GHz MacBookPro with 2Gb of RAM, a 10 second AVCHD clip takes about 2 minutes to convert. In other words, it takes about 12 times as long as the original footage to convert the clip."
I shot some film . . found out that the HG10 does an outstanding job and loved the camera, but was not patient enough to await the conversion. I promptly returned the HG10 and purchased a HV20, with which I have flawless interface with my overall system. I am very satisfied with the HG20 and can't fault the HG10 but decided the exchange of camera worked best for me. What to do in this situation is a matter of personal preference based on many factors, one of which involves some personal quirks (eg patience.)
That's my story and hope it helps!

You do get HD, or at least you can. It is just that AppleTV downscales 1080. Or maybe you are not exporting it out of iM08 in HD format. But make no mistake iM08 can output full HD
