Safari Crashing When Paypal Buttons Clicked On - Since Security Update

Is anyone else having this problem? When I click on a paypal 'add to cart' button, safari automatically crashes every time. I am having this problem on both my G5 Imac and MacBook Pro (both 10.5.1). This has only started happening when I installed the latest update.

I find that Safari has been crashing in general a lot more. Any kind of button pushing on my end usually produces a crash. I haven't had the particular problem with PayPal but a lot of other submit form type activity crashes Safari pretty fast.
Hope they fix this. Safari's gotten a lot more unstable after 10.5

Same here on 10.4.11 and 10.5.1.
Safari crashes when I submit webforms since the last security update. Not every webform causes the crash, but on many webforms the behaviour is reproduceable.

Hello JJ:
IMHO, Safari is very solid under OS X 10.4.11 (Safari 3.0.4). I read all the posts and Safari problems are frequently caused by people installing haxies/extenders. If you have some of them, uninstall them.
In your case, I would try a couple of easy things first.
Clear the cache. Trash the preference file (com.apple.safari.plist) and restart.
There are other steps, but they are more time consuming.

I've no addons/externders installed and the input manager folder doesn't contain anything.
I've deleted the com.apple.Safari.plist and cleaned the cache, but the problem is still here.

I don't have any add-ons at all to Safari and I clear the cache constantly. I really don't think that's the problem.
Also, the post is about Safari under 10.5

HI Barry,
Thanks for your suggestions, but I have tried all of these things and the problem persists. I've had nothing but problems since upgrading to 10.5.

For what it is worth there are reports surfacing that the security update does cause Safari to crash when submitting a particular type of form:

I can't confirm the details of article, but I can report that I've experienced the behavior described (crashing after the security update).

As others are finding, and as reported in the link to the MacObserver article, this is definitely related to implementation of session cookies tied to web forms as issued to web browsers, rooted at the OS-level. I am seeing adverse effects in Firefox as well; Opera seems to be unaffected for the most part for some reason, though I haven't tested this with a variety of sites to call it conclusive that Opera is immune.
Since the Security Update, I can't log into my hosting provider's Control Panel page using Safari without invoking an immediate crash tied to the "KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE" trap. I can get further with Firefox, but only so far when I can't proceed to enter the phpMyAdmin section, again because a session cookie has to be issued to access that section.
While I have to laud Apple for trying to protect us poor, humble end-users from the perils and evils foisted on the unsuspecting in the wild-wooly WWW by miscreants and crooks, breaking basic functionality is not the way to endear us to them..
Off to b!t(h on the DevCon side I go...

Thanks very much for posting the Mac Observer link PPR.
Safari has been crashing for me when I try to access webmail from my web hosting provider (myserverworld.com) since the security update.
After faffing around trying to fix Safari by deleting a prefs file, keychain, and all cookies it's a relief to see it's a known Safari bug, not some obscure file corruption on my machine

Hi All,
I am having the same problem with Safari. I am designing a website for a client with a paypal shopping cart and since I downloaded the mac security update, every time I push Add to Cart in Safari it immediately crashes (window closes).
It works okay in firefox and IE, although in firefox the continue shopping button does nothing, and in Explorer the default level of security doesn't allow cookies which are required in order for the paypal shopping cart to work. What can be done about these issues?
Thanks, J

I've found submitting forms where the target attribute is set will crash Safari. For example... <form action="something.php" method="post" target="_blank">. Firefox and OmniWeb don't seem to have this problem.
If your crash occurs after you submit a form, there's probably nothing you can do except ask the webdeveloper to change the site or not install the security update.

Safari doesn't even display the "post new topic" button so I'm replying here instead...
Any form that includes a "target" will make Safari crash. PayPal tells people to have target="paypal" for the view cart/add to cart buttons.
In this day and age of tabbed browsers, I figure they'd support a nicer way of doing thing. And they do, even though their example code isn't like this.
Remove any target="paypal" code and add the following line instead:
<input type="hidden" name="shopping_url" value="http://www.yourwebsite.com/store_url/">
It's not as fast as the "pop a new window for the shopping cart" solution since it loads your store page every time, but at least it's a cleaner solution (IMHO) and Safari doesn't crash anymore.
Make sure to add this line to both your View Cart and Add to Cart buttons.

Just want to jump in and say I'm having the same problem, not with PayPal per se, but with just a general sampling of websites (I'm usually doing something like filling out a form etc., --like the PayPal think I guess). I'm in Leopard and am religious about no add-ons and clearing cache, etc.
I personally only noticed it happen after a recent update.
