Will Apple be able to fix Airport-Leopard problem soon?

The problem with Leopard and Airport is apparently universal. All routers, all Macs. Tiger works fine, but install Leopard and everyone has wireless dropouts. Has anyone heard whether Apple has a fix coming soon?
I spoke with AppleCare (after being on hold for three hours). The assistant had obviously seen the problem before, but clearly had no solution. He wanted me to reconfigure my Belkin router (I did, but it didn't help), but could not answer how I am supposed to use Airport in a WiFi hot spot where I can't configure someone else's router. Also, he suggested I reinstall Leopard with archiving. I did one better and reinstalled with a complete hard drive erase. The Airport problem still exists. So, it is not just an upgrade problem (carrying over things it shouldn't from Tiger) but a Leopard problem in general.
I am about to downgrade back to Tiger if no solution for Leopard is coming soon. This sure makes Apple look stupid for its TV spot criticizing Windows users for downgrading from Vista.

I'm not having dropouts. I've actually seen a drop in problems on my MacBook Pro. With Tiger, I had a hard time re-connecting to wireless. Now, with Leopard, it re-connects just fine.
I am use openDNS servers, and I've read where DNS causes wireless problems in Leopard, so perhaps you need to manually set your DNS settings. OpenDNS servers are: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

Would this create an unprotected network? Help me out, is this an adjustment to the Mac or to the router? If it adjusts the router, it would do me no good if I attempt to use a different network.

All a DNS does is convert the words to numbers. Your router automatically gets the DNS servers from your ISP. OpenDNS is another company that provides DNS service, and more. It has some phishing protection, among other things. You can also just put your ISPs DNS servers in manually, but there is not guarantee that they will not change them without warning. There is no change to your network security.
I have it set up on my router, but could just put it in each mac.

I think I'll add my tuppence and say that I have just downgraded to Tiger, and I am so much happier now.
I bought my Mac in November (this my first real experience of Mac) and immediately upgraded the pre-installed Tiger to Leopard (using the supplied upgrade CD).
The problems started right away. My symptoms were that the wireless network would not work until I'd de-selected and re-selected the SSID in the Airport menu after each start-up or wake from sleep. It'd also drop out intermittently - maybe once every two or three hours. My wife was close to demanding the old XP workstation back. Not good.
I hard-coded my ISP's DNS settings in to the network configuration, but that didn't help at all. I didn't try OpenDNS, but I don't see how that would have made any difference when all of the other wireless network devices that we own (HP laptop, iPod touch, Wii, old-HP workstation) work fine, all of the time.
Anyway, this weekend I used the Disk Manager in Leopard to resize the Macintosh_HD partition and created a second, smaller partition called Tiger. I used the light-grey discs that came with the Mac to install Tiger, choosing the new partition as the target.
Since installing Tiger my wireless network has worked perfectly, and the little cheese (as the Airport icon has come to be known in our house) is always at maximum strength.
Go Tiger!
P.S. I was also getting another, more serious problem in Leopard - many applications, Safari and Mail included, would not launch - I'd immediately get a Application Quit Unexpectedly message. Anybody else seeing this? I am just stabbing in the dark, but I think it might be because some demo application expired after 30 days, and that might have affected the quick look feature. Scrivener and iWork '08 both expired around the time the problems started.

i had similar problems with airport and on this forum - can't recall where exactly - i found a solution
simply log into the apple base station ( if you're using one ) and turn OFF the option of interference robustness.
that solved it for me
apparently in leopard you can't choose this , but in Tiger it was in the airport menu
i really miss tiger and personally i wish i'd never bothered upgrading as leopard has some serious gui issues etc

I gave up on Leopard until Apple comes out with a fix. Still, does anyone know when that will be?
I am back to Tiger full time and Airport works great. I am surfing wirelessly just fine. I was thinking about getting another MacBook for myself (the one I am having the trouble with is my wife's), but not anymore - at least not until Leopard is fixed. I wonder if Vista is having this problem? My four year Dell (with 2004 Windows XP) is also working fine.
Besides, I am from Louisiana and LSU is playing tonight. So, Geaux Tiger(s)!

Just to add that I'm also getting this wifi dropout issue with my MacBook and Leopard. When the connection dies I also get the grey screen of death if I then try to turn off wifi or reselect the wifi signal.

I am having the same problem: dropout and complete system crashes after installing Leopard. Hopefully Apple is working on an updated airport driver.

Annecdotal I agree, but..
I own two MBPs running Leopard, a Powerbook G4 running Leopard, and an iMac G4 running Leopard. I do not have any wireless drop-outs. In fact, I can sustain about 24 to 54 Mbps over my wireless connection. I am using a ZyXEL P-330W router and also an Apple Airport Extreme 802.11g router.
Having said that, I suggest deleting your old Network service preference for AirPort and recreate it. I've read where the AirPort network service gets corrupted during the Tiger to Leopard upgrade; as opposed to the "Archive or Erase and install" method.
If you are using a Linksys router I bet it could be the Linksys and not the Apple AirPort. Linksys can't keep up with the speed of modern cable broadband Internet connections. If you are stuck with Linksys perhaps upgrading the firmware to dd-wrt will make it more stable.

I am a victim of drop-outs, and I think its due to the fact my macbook pro's wireless continually goes from "On" to "Scanning".
My Mac came with Leopard installed. I'm tempted to try Tiger seeing as existing Mac users state that Tiger had no such issues.

Me too getting the dropouts usinga an Orange Livebox. I'll check the settings.
Adrian, I am also getting applications that quit suddenly - a lot. Anyone else?
My Macbook came pre-installed with Leopard so I upgraded the G5. I like many of the features but these dropouts and application quits are bugging me.

We've been through this before.
If you're having an issue with Leopard and AirPort you need to open a bug with AppleCare on it.
Ranting here won't get it fixed.
The problems are not universal; I haven't had a single drop with my MBP C2D since Tiger and AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002 was released, and that includes after the upgrade to Leopard.
FWIW, I connect to an older snow AEBS using 802.11g and WPA2 but have had no dropouts at a variety of public hotspots.
I understand your frustration, I really do, but the only way to work the issue is through AppleCare and perhaps through Belkin, if it turns out their router has something to do with the problem.
