printing from XP to Airport Express-connected printer stopped working

We have an HP printer hooked up to an Airport Express. We have a Windows XP machine that has been set up to print using Bonjour and the Airport, and it has been working for months. Suddenly, it is not working. Documents get to the printer queue, but then error out.
We also have a Power Mac set up, running Tiger, that still works. We can also hook up the printer directly to the Windows PC and it prints fine. We have tried the following:
-Recreating the printer in Windows. (The Bonjour Wizard finds the printer just fine.)
-Reinstalling Bonjour 1.04
-Restarting Windows and the printer and the AE (several times)
-Turning off the firewall
-Printing documents from multiple applications
-Creating a printer with a generic driver
No matter what, the document errors out in the printer queue when we try to print wirelessly from the PC. We don't know exactly when this started, because we haven't printed anything in a while. We can't think of any changes that have been made recently, except for automatic Windows updates. Has anyone else seen this problem recently? Any suggestions?

I had this problem intermittently. Are you having problems accessing the internet at all? My problems were caused by intermittent internet access. Once I fixed that problem the wireless printing worked. What kind of encryption are you using if any on your wireless network: WEP/WPA? I was using WPA and it was causing my problems. Try turning the encryption off on your base station and then try printing. If it works then you have your culprit. It that is the problem, there is a patch you can download off microsoft's website that improves your PC's ability to handle WPA encryption. Good luck.

The encryption doesn't seem to have been the culprit, turning it off didn't change anything. Throughout all of this the wireless access to the internet seemed to not be affected. Oddly if we connected the printer to the mac and shared it, the PC could find and print wirelessly via bonjour. So this would seem to suggest that that portion was also working. However in the end the solution was to point the PC at the IP of the AE and it can find the printer correctly. It seems the error is somewhere in the translation of the address of the AE.

I have to believe many others have had this same problem, AP Extreme Printers work fine on MACs but all of a sudden stop working on Windoze machines. The suggestion above also solved my problem. I simply went it to where the port is configured and switched the IP Name from IP_APExtreme.local to 10.0.1.1 (what ever the IP address of the base station is) and all of sudden the printers worked again.

Thank you Hypersonic and johnfmiller! Reconfiguring the port to the AE IP address worked for me!!!
My wife hasn't been able to print from her Dull notebook for days now and my suggestion that she get a MacBook like mine were not well received... Now that this problem is solved, harmony has returned to our house.

Harmony is indeed restored, thank you. We were having the same exact problem. All of a sudden a couple of days ago, poof, the PC would no longer print through it's normal network connection, only through the shared Mac laptop on the network, and only when that Mac was not asleep . Resetting the IP did not work for me until I ALSO had to configure port protocol to RAW. In case anyone else has the same problem.

Excellent...great find! Had the same problem. Mac PB and two PC laptops on XP via Bonjour have been printing fine for many years through an Airport Extreme to an HP 7300 AIO printer. Then one day last week the Mac continued printing fine over wifi to Airport Extreme but both PC's (one Dell and one Compaq) stopped printing both via direct wired USB and wifi through the AE. Microsoft must have put out an update that hosed something on the XP side. Tried reinstalling drivers, deleting and rebuilding bonjour printer, resetting devices, etc. Nothing fixed it. Found this link and reconfigured the port as mentioned above to AE's IP address, RAW setting was already set, and they are now printing fine again. Thx for the help!

THANK YOU. This worked for me as well. I have no idea how or why this setting changed but thanks for pointing out the solution.

Many thanks for this simple but valuable information! I have been looking for at least the past month off and on for the solution to my printer problems with my XP laptop, and nothing worked. Such a quick fix. Thanks again!

Thanks to everyone from me as well. I mysteriously began having this problem about 2-3 weeks ago. Prior to that my wife/kids wintel laptops had been coexisting nicely. I have not been paying close attention, but wasn't there a firmware update that went out sometime during the past month? I'm wondering if that had something to do with it. I hate to think how much time this has cost people; I spent a number of hours on this as I know many of you have too.
Thanks again!

Thanks. This works but it doesn't make sense. I have two XP machines one worked fine and one didn't. This made it work again. Both are ethernet connected. I tried reinstalling Bonjour, printer drivers, printer ports, name changes, rebooting, etc. Nothing else worked.
Thanks again for the suggestion.

I get the gist of the stuff about changing the IP address (presumably of the printer) but I sure don't know how to translate that into the real world. Can anybody help a truly clueless user?

I found the same problems as everyone else after all the updates.
I fixed it by changing the Standard TCP/IP port from a NAME to an ACTUAL IP ADDRESS of the Airport. This fixed it.
