Normal 8800GT no workie

Just tried installing my 8800GT from my HTPC into my MacPro. If I try to boot into OS X it just fails, no picture on my monitors and it clearly doesn't get past post because if I touch the power button it shuts off. If I force it to boot into Vista (boot camp) everything works fine (and the 8800GT kicks butt vs the ATI card). Oh well, no cheap 8800GT for us.

You might need to wait till the drivers are actually released to start with. Not to mention that you will probably need the rom from apple version of the card.

It has been that way ever since there was a Mac Pro and 8800. Even the new Apple branded 8800 won't work in prior units.
from Barefeats:
ALERT TO OWNERS OF "OLD" MAC PROS! (CORRECTED)
The GeForce 8800 GT is NOT compatible with the older Mac Pro (August 2006, April 2007) as we assumed. I've been informed that new machines use EFI64, the old Mac Pros use EFI32, to work in an EFI32 machine you need an EFI32 ROM.

I strongly mistrust that statement from Barefeats. I don't know where they are getting that information from but as of yet noone has been able to test whether the new 8800GT will work in existing Mac Pros, Barefeats included.
Couple that with the fact that Apple customer support are telling people that the new cards work fine and you can see that Barefeats may have just jumped the gun a bit.

That doesn't matter here quite yet. It has been known that the 8800 will work under a windows partition.

Yes, and no driver is going to change it. Also, the EFI rom is 128k and most PCs have a 64k bios rom.

Hi. It's me, Rob-ART of BareFeats.
I got the info on the new GeForce 8800 GT not working on the old Mac Pros from the programmers at Blizzard (WoW). They are very bummed because they wanted to upgrade all their Mac Pros with the new card.
I'm bummed if there is no workaround with a firmware patch. I still have a GeForce 8800 GT kit on order which I'll be glad to try booting on our two older Mac Pros but it's not due to arrive for 5 weeks.
The latest, greatest Mac.

Quite interesting that you have to wait 5 weeks for the card in the US, here in the UK Apple are able to supply the 8800 in 8 days. I'm not in a position to get the new Mac Pro so until someone tests the new card in a Quad core 2 x 2.66GHz i will hold fire on purchasing the upgrade. I do wonder though as there is no indication on the Apple UK website to indicate that this card will not work on my MP!

8800GT is a little better than the 1900XT but it's not exactly a huge step up. I'm pretty sure Apple selected the 8800GT because of it's lower power requirements when compared to the 8800GTX and/or 8800GTX Ultra.
Why would an older 4 core MacPro have a EFI32 ROM vs. the EFI64 ROM?? That makes absolutely no sense. The motherboard/chipset used is 64bit capable, the CPU is 64bit capable, OS X Tiger (10.4.x) was 64bit, yet the EFI is 32? Now, that boggles my mind -- I hope Apple start adding some resources to their MacPro hardware division, especially now they're cash rich at over $200/share.

MacPro (early 2008) has two new PCI-E 2.0 slots which apparently are required for the new 8800 graphics card.
The previous MacPro has all PCE-E 1.0 slots.

This tech note seems to confirm that the GeForce 8800 GT won't work with the old Mac Pros:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305346
Note the words under the list of cards that says, "All of these cards are only compatible with the family of computers with which they shipped."

Er, it's twice as fast as the X1900. That's a pretty good step up.
And the GT is based on the newer G92 GPU, and is about as fast as the older GTX. I don't think it would have made any sense to go with the older, hotter, more power hungry GTX.

Rob-Art,
Thanks for the pointers and contacts. Yesterday i contacted the UK Apple sales team and was told, after 6-7mins of them 'consulting' that the new 8800GT would work with the pre-jan 8 MacPros.
Interesting contradictions... Will try Sales folks again in the light of this tech pub.

Adam,
Will have to disagree with you there, the 8800GT is not 2X faster than 1900XT (at least not at the resolutions I use). It does bring DX10 for those of us dual booting to Vista. nVidia are releasing their 9800 series cards next month which are supposed to be 2X faster than the 8800GTX so once again the MacPro video option is almost already outdated. But I commend Apple for at least trying to keep up.
