OK, audio only in Quicktime, but it plays perfectly in VLC as it's a Perian conversion.

Indeed installing Pacifist (trial mode works but its worth $20) and dragging the pkg file (not the dmg) to Pacifist did work. Tell Pacifist the first time it encounters a file that has to be replaced to replace them all without asking and it will work. Once 7.3 is installed then the video as well as the audio on mpeg files will work. Trying to uninstall 7.4 is not practical, there are way too many places that QT hides things, almost as bad as windows in that respect. Try Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/

Thank you thank you thank you!! I had the same loss of video with the QTPro 7.4 "update." I already had Pacifist but never used it. (Am a new Mac user). Ran it on the QT 7.31 package and in less than 10 minutes I was back to audio and video with QT Pro 7.3.1. No apparent administrative problems either.

I was able to play my videos in iTunes, but nothing played in QTP, not even those created as ,mov.

You can use VLC, works very well. The problem with QT is that other software uses it as well. I use iMovie, and the MP4 import function is screwed up too. So, this evening I'm going to try the installation of the 7.3.1 version with the Pacifist tool.
I'm not very happy with the whole situation. As someone here said before: didn't anyone test this??

I'm unable to see or hear web videos (including Apple's) since updating to QT 7.4. Many users seem to be saying that these steps don't help, but I'm interested to try them. However:
  • Will any of these steps cause me to lose my QTPro key?
  • How does one find and remove third-party plug-ins? The only non-Apple thing I'm aware of using with QT is Flip4Mac, and removing its preference pane did not help.

I see this problem discussed elsewhere (including http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20080116143227411), but I did not find anything about it in Apple's support section aside from the Discussions--that is, nothing from Apple. Do they not know about it?

Whoops. I meant Klaus1's recommended steps from the preceding page:

• Reinstall QuickTime
• Remove Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
• Remove HD/Library/Internet Plugins/Quicktime.plugin.webplugin and
• QuickTime Plugin.plugin
• search for conflicting, third-party plugins and remove them
• Repair Permissions and restart

Hmmm. Can't seem to make Preview or quotes work here today.

Please do not follow any recommendation to remove QuickTime plugins. If you do that you will never be able to see QuickTime content in any web browser. This is just bad advice.

That's correct. Select Contents of QuickTime 7.3.1 for Tiger, and then click on the Install button in the toolbar. Click on the Replace button when prompted so QT 7.3 writes over any old QT 7.4 files.

I've performed this test, and things seem to be working properly now.

And if you found Pacifist to be a huge lifesaver for you, you might even want to purchase a copy to show your appreciation.

Pacifist saves! Hooray for Mr. Marco and props to Pacifist.

Im back to QT 7.3.1 and all functions operate properly again so far.
Interesting to note that QuickTime's about box from Sys. Preferences still think 7.4 is installed yet QT 7.4 re-spawned in Software Update, unchecked that.

I just went to prepare a presentation that employs some old .mpg and .mov files first exported back in 200-2004. They all worked fine in June. Now, after the QT 7.6 update, NONE of these files play. Well, they play, but they're distorted, have the wrong frame size, distorted images, show random spots, flicker, and crash my computer with considerable regularity. Thanks Apple. It's not like academic and artists use, you know, movies...

In any case, I'm supposed to do a video presentation this afternoon. What's the best way to force it back to QT7.3? If I just run the QT7.3 installer, it won't let me downgrade. Is Pacifist the way to go? I've never heard of it before.

Thanks for any tips!

After going back to 7.3.1 with Pacifist I reinstalled 7.3.1 from the regular installer just for good measure. System Preference shows 7.3.1. QT Pro key was retained.
