Ever since I updated my quicktime with the quicktime 7.4 update, all my MPEG4 videos play only as audio files and not as videos. Does anyone know what happened or how I can return my Quicktime back to Quicktime 7.3?

Did you repair permissions & restart your computer after updating?

Restarted a couple of times and yet the same results. Do I just have to grab the restore dvd and restore my computer back to the way it was?

Exact same problem with .mp4 video podcast of Democracy Now. It plays in iTunes but if you try to play it in QuickTime Player you get audio only and no video. VLC can play it just fine, video and audio.

I installed the update through software update, and then used disk utilities to repair my disk permissions on my hard drive. It was recommended to repair them in a post I read long ago about os x on here and have done it every-time I install anything on my machine, and have absolutely no problem loading videos of web sites or my machine. I did have a problem viewing the new video for the iphone features (audio no video) All I had to do was pause the playback for a second then restart the playback and all was fine video and audio worked great..

I repaired permissions. Please get the Democracy Now video podcast, download an episode, find the .mp4 file, and try to open it in QuickTime Player. No video, only audio. This thread is about specific .mp4 file problems, not videos in general. Yes I can play movie trailers .mov files with QT 7.4.

Argh, I am having the same issue. MP4 videos previously can be played in QT 7.5 but since QT 7.6 upgrade, only audio but no video. The same MP4 can be played in iTunes and VLC.
I tried uninstalling Perian (even though it might not be related to Perian) but still same. Could someone help me to get back my video (for MP4 files) in QT 7.6?? Pleaseeeee....

I'm having the same issue after running the QT 7.4 update. .mp4 files are only playing audio for me. .mov files still work. A friend suggested I use the program VLC to open them and the ones that have audio only open just fine with that program. Hope there's a quick fix to this one though as some of the .mp4 files are integral to the presentations I make to my classes and I like QT better.

I have the same problem. After running Software Update and installing QuickTime 7.4 I get only audio with .mp4 files. .mov files work just fine. Judging from the volume of similar posts I'd say the QuickTime update is faulty. I have repaired permissions, but it didn't fix the issue.

Hi everyone
QT 7.4 update problem with .mp4 files is very serious. There are many others complaints about this elsewhere in quicktime discussions and on the web.
It seem that only these with mpeg-4 video code are “broken” : no video only audio. mp4 files with H.264 video encoding plays fine.
Also, these mpeg-4 files can’t be use no longer with other applications like MPEG Streamclip 1.9, Toast 7 and DIVX Player 2.1. (These only I’ve tested). Same thing with CoverFlow mode and FrontRow 2.1
But they play fine with iTunes 7.6 and VLC 0.8.6.
I'm afraid we have to wait another update to fix this.

Some of my .mp4 videos (encoded with ffmpeg X) are not played at their actual size.
If it's a 16-9 ratio, the player modifies it to 4-3 ! Unbelievable !
Before, it worked fine.
But those video have this image ratio problem with VLC and I did not check with this app before.

Well reinstalling QT 7.4 did not work for me. I am on Tiger 10.4.11. For the guy who says it works (who I noticed is on Leopard), try subscribing to the Democracy Now video podcast, download an episode, find it in the Finder, and try to play it in QuickTime Player and see if it works. It does not for me - audio only.
I noticed some other Leopard users said .mp4s don't work for them either.
