No internet access after 1.1.3 update
Posted: Jan 15, 2008 5:23 PM

I just updated my iPhone to 1.1.3 and I can no longer reach the Internet over wifi. Even though the phone says it's connected to my home router, Safari always says "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server" no matter what URL I point it to and the iTunes store can't connect either. I've tried "forgetting" my wifi router and reconnecting, rebooting my router, powering off the phone and powering it back on, and nothing works. All my computers using the same router have no trouble connecting to the internet--it's just the iPhone.

Anybody else experiencing this? Anyone have any workarounds or suggestions? I was running 1.1.2 prior to this--no hacks or 3rd party software--and it was working fine. The update went smoothly as far as I know--no errors or anything.

I don't get Edge reception at my house, so I'm not sure if connecting over Edge works or not.

Thanks for your help!

Have you tried an iPhone Reset and/or the Reset Network Settings option on the iPhone?

I have the same problem. Everything about the update is working for me (though I haven't tried SMS since the update) but my wifi connection is gone and not just for Safari, but everything that uses it. Everything still works fine on Edge. I tried renewing my DHCP lease, that didn't help.

Kinda ticked.

Same here. My network shows up but when I connect to it nothing happens. The wifi symbol at the top never appears? I used it today on a couple of networks with no problems. After updating to 1.1.3 - no wifi.

May I suggest letting your router software find your Iphone. I recently installed a Linksys wireless router replacing a hardwire one. I was not able to access the web with the Iphone until I let the Linksys scan my wireless system and then find my Iphone. Works fine from then on. Hope this helps.

Lost wifi also. After a reset it shows up until I click on mail or safari. Reset airport extreme, reset security, made sure everything is right. Xbox, 3 MBP, 2 Mac minis all on wifi working fine.

After reading some of the suggestions here, I tried resetting my iPhone by holding down the home and top button until I saw the Apple logo, but that didn't help. So then I reset the network settings, which also didn't help, so I then I reset "all" settings. Nothing. So then I tried to do a Restore from iTunes and got an Unknown Error 1602. Following Apple's instructions for when this occurs, I proceeded to uninstall iTunes, uninstall the various device profile files it lists, reboot my Mac, and then install the latest iTunes from scratch. I was then able to complete a restore of my iPhone, but that also has not helped. I also tried fiddling more with the router--disabling all security, for example, and enabling mixed mode--but nothing has solved the problem. I couldn't find any option for "scanning" devices on the network from the router as one person suggested, though I am using a Linksys WRT54G router. But the iPhone worked fine before the update, and all of my computers still work fine, so I doubt it's the router at fault.

Just to clarify, I do see the wireless symbol and the iPhone gives every indication that it's connected. It just doesn't work.

I appreciate all of the suggestions posted so far--any additional help is most welcome!

I'm having the same problem. I can't access any webpages at all. Keep getting the "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server" message. I reset my router, my iphone, did NOT do a full restore but I've reset it several times and checked the router. My MACBOOK can connect without a problem. All after the 1.1.3 update. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Same problem as everyone else.
It says its connecting, seems to do so for a minute but when you go to use it the phone kicks over to edge only :(

It clearly is connecting with my router, I reset it and tried a bogus password, which it rejected, retried with the correct one and it connected but, same as before wont work. Man I HOPE they get this sorted WAY Fast.

Follow-up
After reseting the phone several times I resent the wifi router and it connected up and seems to be working fine. If you have not resent your router give that a try, even if its working with other equipment (like mine was).

Ok, I finally got my iPhone wifi to work by plugging my Mini into my router via ethernet and then sharing that connection using "Airport" on the Mini. The iPhone will work properly using the Mini's shared wifi, but not my Linksys router's wifi. It seems apparent that Apple has introduced an incompatibility with my particular Linksys router (WRT54G) and perhaps others with this 1.1.3 update. I hope they get it fixed quickly. Everything worked fine with 1.1.2.

Perhaps others who are having this problem should include their router brands and models so Apple can compile a list of incompatibilities.

With the iPhone 1.1.3 update, Apple apparently has introduced an incompatibility with the Linksys WRT54G wireless router (and perhaps others), which worked properly under the iPhone 1.1.2 software. My temporary workaround has been to plug a Mac directly into my wireless router via Ethernet, share that connection using "Airport", and then connect my iPhone to that shared wifi network instead of my router's wifi network.

This isn't a router-specific issue.

I have an Airport Extreme (802.11n) and have same issues as those with Linksys/belkin/netgear, etc.

This then removes the wifi hardware from the issue and places the issue soley on the iPhone update.

My wifi drops, shows as lowest signal, or shows but doesn't work.
My laptop (macbook pro) shows full signal and blazes on speed.

On the (i)phone with tech support...they asked:

1. Any gaming systems: PS3, Xbox, Wii connected to wifi?
2. Was there a WEP or similar password that had been in use on iPhone prior to 1.1.3?

Now with product specialist.

They haven't heard of this issue yet, but are sure they will be bombarded by calls today (no sh!t)

They's come back to me: Apple Engineering is getting involved so this will be a patch. Apparently many support specialists have gotten calls and all have asked the usual "have you done..." questions and then it's to Apple engineering.

Oh well...let's be patient.

I also have an Airport Extreme "n" along with an Airport Express extending my wireless network and for playing iTunes music wirelessly through my stereo and I've had zero problems with my wireless connection or internet accessing since installing the 1.1.3 update.

I know that sometimes when Apple introduces OS X security updates, a firmware update is required by some 3rd party wireless router manufacturers in order for a particular model to be compatible with Apple's security update but this seems different.
