iTunes rentals-slow downloads

Is anyone experiencing slow download times with movie rentals? I got the impression that the movie rentals would download quickly, not 30+ minutes. I am using a broadband connection to a new iMac so I don't think that is a problem. Maybe this is normal-would appreciate your thoughts.

Considering there are only 8 billion people trying to download rentals now, it's going to be slow.
After a few weeks the initial enthusiasm should slow up and downloads should speed up.

I got you both beat. 7 Hours till my movie is done d/l. Sad day:( I'm excited to try this cuz I've never really used online video rentals, but I'm not sure if I'll keep this up or not.
Its also sad cuz its "Ronin" from 1998, so probably not a very popular download.
When I tried netflix, it didn't work because I was on a mac, is there any work arounds for this? Does blockbuster allow online viewing on macs?
Thanks!

Remember the movies are around 1 GB to 2 GB in size, so they could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to download, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

I am downloading the rent movie; but it is slow. Why the Apple cannot provide a streaming rent service ?
That will be nice. And the 24 hours rent time is too short for me. what if I have something to do during the movie, try to watch it for tomorrow or later.
I think at least 2 days will be great time to rent the movie.

Last night I rented "Live Free Die Hard". The download said two hours. After a few minutes waiting got really old really fast. So I clicked on the movie and it started playing. The trick is to get enough of the movie downloaded so that when it plays it won't stop and have to be restarted.
I don't know if that was a wrong thing to do, but it worked.

Yes you can. Unlike Apple TV, iTunes does not offer to start playing, you have to double click the downloading movie yourself after the download starts.

I'm looking at 17 kbps, 200 hours to download a 1.65GB movie. When I first started the download, it was going much faster, around 3 hours if I recall. My download test speed is around 400 kbps. My wife showed me a DVD and said this is a better way to go. I agree. Apple better figure out how to speed this up or I'm outahere.

Yes I thought the movie would start in a few minutes. I rented my first movie and it's taking 3 hours to download. I thought if you are renting, downloading was eliminated??

My answer to slow downloads...who cares. If I know that I want to watch a movie in the evening, I'll just start the rental/download process and go have lunch, read a book, whatever.
These files are gigantic. I downloaded Bananas. It is close to a gigabite in size. That's only an 1 hr 22min. movie too. I'm on DSL and it took about an hour or so. Cables probably gonna be faster.

<<"who cares?">>
really???
all i'm saying is that I'm ****** because I want to watch a movie now, I find the movie, I click play, and I have to wait five hours???????? I mean, really, I'm just going to go to the video store. I can't wait around to watch the movie in five hours, I don't have time. You would think Apple would be prepared for the demand! This is just the same as going to the video store and getting back to your house only to find that the disc is broken. How can they operate like this?

I was so excited about this! I made dinner than started my rental, expecting to be able to watch it shortly after I was finished with dinner...
I have been waiting over 3 hours and I've only downloaded about 100 MBs out of over 900. My internet usually allows me to torrent 1 GB files in an hour... tops. This is crazy. I really wanted to watch a movie tonight and I won't be able to, because the night is nearly over (in London). So I do care that the downloads take so long.
Please fix this Apple.

Very slow for me, too.
I have the fastest DSL plan available from ATT and it's downloading the latest Pirates of the Caribbean in about 3.5 hours. This is much slower than downloads used to be for movies (before rentals were available, downloads typically took less than an hour.)
