Movie Rentals: Grey screen and no sound !

Hi guys,
Right, so this rental business should have gone through QA, right? Nope.
Rented out a film, pressed play in iTunes, the only thing I get is a desperately grey box and no sound.
If I go to the Chapters section, I get a whole bunch of pictures from the film. If I select one of them, it takes me to the bookmarked position and displays just that single frame, but no motion thereafter.
If I try to open the film in Quicktime Player (v7.4) (the films are stored in the iTunes Music directory, under Movies), same grey screen, with the additional error message at the bottom of the screen "Authorization needed to view content".
It is worth mentioning that to actually rent the film, I had to be authenticated in the iTunes store and therefore, my iTunes IS authorized ...
Then, I try to move the film to my iPod. To my great surprise, it plays fine, but I would definitely prefer playing it on my 23" ...
Now, Apple Support, tell me WHY you didn't do enough QA to get this working in the main player, ie iTunes ? When can I expect to get this working and will I get some kind of refund back, for this lousy performance and the QA I had to do on your software to find some kind of solution?
I'm generally a big fan of Apple products, but this stinks, guys! Get it fixed!

I'm having the same problem (grey playback with no sound - authentication error). Talking to tech support now, they say they haven't seen it.
Question: are you in Europe right now? We're traveling, I'm wondering if the authorization is a problem because we're not in the US (Amazon un-box had that problem)

I also am having the same problem. I just rented The Lives of Others and just receive the blank gray screen. I am in the USA and do not understand the problem. Have not attempted to transfer to my iPhone because downloading has not completed yet. Any clarifications on resolving the issue would be great.

I'm starting to see a pattern with the various problems.
This one and the -5002 errors and other problems like mine seem to be related with accessing our iTunes Store account, whether it be for authorization, shopping cart contents, download queue, etc.
Seems like there's a widespread problem with iTunes not being able to access out accounts on the Apple/iTunes servers.
Anyone disagree?

My account is fine seeing as I was able to start downloading the file. Your issue may be separate from mine.

Same. I can download the file but it plays with a grey screen and no sound (if you can even call that playing). Then i get the pop-up dialog authentication box.
Just rented a different movie on another mac, but using the same account, and it plays!
So its either the original mac (macbook pro + 10.5), or the file (Die Hard 4).

I rented 300 and it locks up iTunes...I was able to open it in Quick Time but then only got the gray screen and no sound.
The Apple tech. people say they have not seen the gray screen?
All they need to do is read some of the threads...lots of users are having major problems with the rentals.

I am also experiencing this problem. I called apple support but to no avail. I am assuming they are trying to create a fix for this and the date/time issue (which they want to get out as soon as possible.)
But still pretty annoying.

I found the solution to this problem. I purchased another song through iTunes Music Store, and it fixed the grey screen. I can now watch the rental with both sound and audio! I guess it has something to do with the computer not being authorized properly once the rental was downloaded so buying another song forces the computer to reauthorize everything.

I am not sure if you both are referring to the freezing issue with iTunes, but as far as I know, this solution only works for the grey box with now video or sound. It could also be that I just got lucky

I got the gray screen when I tried to play it in Quick Time...gave me more options than iTunes did...at least it did something.

No this doesn't have to do with freezing itunes. when i play a movie rental I just get a grey screen with no sound. I can see the chapter title preview pictures and iTunes thinks it is playing b/c the time actually elapses. but it doesn't activate the 24 hour countdown.
