Any new information on this issue?

Anyone contact AppleCare lately and what was their response?

Just a reminder for those finding this issue for the first time...

So everyone please fill out the feedback to apple at this link:

and refer to the Bug ID (posted by tournesol):

Nothing new Ken.
I am holding till 10.5.2 release. If nothing happen I am preparing to go to local Apple store where I bought my SR MBP last November and raise the ****. I was there twice. First time they replaced computer without asking any questions. It was from same butch made in October in Shanghai with the same ELP problem. Second time they ask to wait for updates. So my deadline is 10.5.2. I personally don't think it would be fixed. I more and more think it's just a lemon misfiring once in a while for unknown reason. From what I learned reading zillions of posts it's most likely just faulty assembly (without adequate grounding, for example). I tried lots of different things but this annoying problem always coming back...

i took my 17" mbp into the apple store last week. they sent it off for repair - i got it back today after they replaced the keyboard. the problem is still here. this is so aggravating. oh - and the spacebar on the 'new' keyboard squeaks when it's pressed. lame.

ACare says 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 will fix it.

Thanks ... Ken

I really think this issue is software related. When I use XP via Bootcamp, I never see the ELP issue. If it was hardware, I would guess I'd see it under XP too.

"ACare says 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 will fix it."

How about a fix for 10.4, I have no desire to pay $129 for something that should not even be an issue for a top flight laptop.I have no need/desire for leopard, but want my keyboard to function.

Apple please do the right thing!!!

this problem is killing me (UCK!) and I just filed this bug report (pasted below) on the MacBook feedback page - testing it just now on the text entry fields to post this message, I see that clicking 2x into a field before starting to type seems to consistently work OK (no missing first character) so I guess I'll be developing that neurotic habit...

FEEDBACK to APPLE
"I've heard that maybe this is a known issue - and I'd like someone to reply letting me know whether or not it is.

Ever since I got this machine a couple of months ago, I've had a problem where much of the time when I first click into a text entry field or text entry window, the first character I type is not being entered somehow. At first I thought I just needed to get more used to the keypad on this machine, but I'm now convinced this is a more real problem than that. When searching online I read about an issue of the trackpad or keyboard becoming unresponsive for long periods of time, but that has never happened to me. Nonetheless, I tried it with the "Ignore Accidental Input" set both ways, downloaded and installed all the updates, etc. but the problem persists. Though in some way it may seem like a trivial issue, for someone who uses the machine as much as I do it's not trivial at all - it's extremely frustrating.

Searching the forums just now as I write this I see I'm not the only one experiencing this problem, and replacing the keyboard doesn't seem to fix it - so it's either a design flaw or software problem...

Not just MacBook Pro same problem here on one - just one - MacBook but not on two others or an iMac.

Seems like the keyboard goes to sleep, needing a first keystroke to wake it - then it's fine. Until you review the work and try adding a comma or such like.

Hopefully 10.5.2 will sort it.

I just reported the bug for the second time. No response from Apple the first time. This has got to be the most aggravating bug ever!

so i am on hold with applecare as i speak. ive been having this issue since i bought my MBP about a month ago and have finally decided to call applecare for the first time. they told me to install an update that focused on keyboard issues but that didnt do anything. so i called back and they told me they are going to get an Apple Specialist to help and the wait would be an hour. so after waiting 45 min already im going to have to hold it out for another hour. there better be something they can do. all i want to do is figure this out so im going to wait. ill definetly keep you all up to date.

i just got off with the Apple Specialist and he gave me some very simple instructions. and so far i havnt missed any first letters. heres what he told me to do.

1. shut down your computer

2. remove the ac adapter if plugged in

3. remove battery

4. with battery removed, hold down the power button for 5 seconds. nothing visible should happen.

5. put battery back in and plug in ac adapter

6. now this was the only tricky part, locate your control (apple), option, P, and R keys.

7. push the power button and as soon as you hear the start up sound hold down all those keys at once. keep holding these down till you hear the startup sound an additional 2 more times.

and thats all he said to do. something about resetting the hardware. im really hoping and praying that this resolves the issue.

Tried that one a number of time but did not cure the problem. Lucky I guess that I only have it when I have my USB mouse plugged in using the apple stock drivers.

Hope the fix continues.

Could you post back in a few days to a week and give us an update?

Thanks ... Ken
