Mail and Address Book: Missing contacts after importing a VCard
Posted: Jan 22, 2008 3:47 PM

Okay, I don't know precisely when this happened, but I guess it might have happened when I upgraded to Leopard. I rarely used Address Book, but I would add contacts of some of my friends to in every now and then from Mail. Right click on the address in Mail and select "Add to Address Book".

Immediately after upgrading to Leopard I had received a massive VCard from my coworkers, which I promptly added to my Address Book. Weeks later I'm digging around in Address Book and I see only about 10% of my old addresses. ***?!

Stranger, when I go back to Mail and go to Window>Previous Recipients, among the long list of emails there, it shows that the emails that I had long ago added to Address Book ARE indeed in Address Book.

So, three questions:
• Where did my old Address Book contacts go?
• Why does Previous Recipients list my missing contacts as being in Address Book when Address Book itself doesn't show them?
• How can I get the contacts that Previous Recipients sees to appear in Address Book again?

You are connecting Previous Recipients with AddressBook, and they are not connected. If you notice, though, on the bottom right corner of Previous Recipients, you see "Add to AddressBook". You can select as many addresses as you like, and add them all at once. Use shift+click, or command+click to select multiple, or non-contiguous names.

I guess I wasn't clear. As I mentioned, Previous Recipients sees them in Address Book but they are not in Address Book. The entries in Previous Recipients are marked with a little card icon next to them, and if I choose their name in Previous Recipients, "Add to Address Book" is grayed out. I cannot add them.

That's what I meant by saying that Previous Recipients sees contacts in Address Book but the contacts aren't actually in Address Book.

Ah, OK, that is tough. The ones with the v-card icon are already supposed to be in addressbook, and so, the button goes gray. Just FYI.

Yah. But they don't appear in Address Book anymore. :(

Something I noticed, in Users>Home>Library>Application Support>Address Book there is "AddressBook.data" and "AddressBook.data.previous". Might the ".previous" version be where my old contacts are residing? Might there be a way to pry them out and merge them into the other file?

Hmm.

Not certain. Do you have a backup of that folder?

Ah, I got them back.

I took the "AddressBook-v22.abcddb" file out of the folder. I placed it on the Desktop and restarted. Launched Address Book and all the "lost" contacts were back. Seems though that every past version of the contact was restored, so I have been spending the past hour or so merging contacts back together and tidying everything back up.

Whew!

Thanks scb for bouncing ideas out there! I'm putting this down as solved, and that worrysome *.abcddb file I've read about in these discussions is the culprit once again it seems.

Figured through trial and error. Removing the *.abcddb and restarting restored missing contacts.
