Three lines on the screen

I think I have stuck pixels on my screen. They're in the form of two pink lines and one yellow line, all running vertically. They first appeared when I was watching a DVD. They're invisible on a white/really light background but visible elsewhere.
My mac was playing up when I upgraded it to a two gig memory card (which I think was designed for Intel core 2 duo macs, not my humble Intel core duo). I've since changed to two 1 gig memory cards and all the problems seem to have fixed themselves except for the screen. I've owned the computer for about a year and a half.
I've tried "pixel-fixing" programs off the internet but the lines persist. I've tried massaging the screen with a soft cloth as well. Every forum I've seen only has messages from people with one or two dead pixels, not whole lines, hence I'm starting a new thread.
Hopefully that's enough info. to go off, didn't want to be vague!

Early 17"? Serial in the range W860xxxxxU2N?
I've now how 4 from a room of 20 (all U2Ns) fail in the last 2 months.

WELL, this is just because apple now deletes every single post about this issue, which has been proven to be a manufacturing defect.
This post shouldn't live long either...

Hi Tommy-od,
what you have described looks an awful lot to the screen problems more than officially 400 people have, it wouldn't be too hard to find that petition
Your early 2006 17'' iMac is about a year and a half. Did you get applecare with it?
a) Yes
b) No
a) Use it, as you'll need some replacement on your iMac. I think you get your screen changed and i'm not sure if the main board too.
b) Your iMac will be welcome at any apple store. You'll just have to pay for the fix. It's not cheap.
By the way, is your iMac's serial number somewhere near W860*****U2N ? It has a lot to do since "W8" means it came from some Shangai factory
About the lines; they'll multiply. sorry.
About the fix: Somebody said on another topic he had to fix his already repaired screen.
About the cost: my opinion (i have seven lines on my display) is that the fix is just too expensive. You are given a possibliy used screen, you don't have zero-dead-pixel policy, the fix is warranteed 90 days and replaced parts can be used parts.
About alternatives: An external display can be attached and you can duplicate image on the imac and the secondary display. However you won't be able to put the primary (imac) screen on sleep and -just- work on your secondary. It's far far cheaper than any fix, you get warranty to no comparison with apple's fix AND you've got a zero dead pixel policy from some brands.
Oh, did i mention 17'' screens are hard to find in stores? At least in spain. So when comparing prices (fix vs external) take in mind what you are paying for a 17'' and what you are paying for a brand new i.e. 19''
Finally: this post will self-destruct in 5... 4...

Hey guys, cheers for the response, I was expecting something along those lines but it was worth a shot! My serial number is the type you mentioned, and I didn't get the extended warranty, so what with me being a bag-o-shite student it looks like I'm stuck with it for now; lesson for the future!
And I can probably get a nice big third-party flatscreen pretty cheap to watch films on; advice for anyone else with this problem!

Hi,
I had the problem first in September, replaced the display in December and got my first line on the new display about 2 weeks later.
I took the iMac back to repair today, with 23 vertical lines in the display.
Strangely, the first repair was covered by my AppleCare plan, but today they couldn't find me covered. I'll have to prove that I indeed have AppleCare. I believe I have everything I will need, but it is pain anyway.
The blog where you can find the petition is: http://imaclines.blogspot.com/
Best regards!

Hi Tommy... the problem is with the LOGIC BOARD that is probably burned in the IN and OUT of graphics... that is, inside image (iMac's screen) and outside trough the Video Out port.
My advise is for you to go to an Apple Store and hand you Mac over to repair.
It will cost a New Logic Board and that's not cheap but i'ts chepear that a new iMac, so do it.
I Now this 'cause a friend of mine has this problem and the repair team told him this.
But he lives in Brazil and Apple in Brazil is a little bit expensive hehehe, the Logic Board
is twice the price a New imac in the U.S.
so... be glad you don't live in Brazil hehehe

My first vertical line appeared 2 days ago. I have an appointment today at Apple Store. We'll see what they'll say.

Add me to the list!! Got my first one about a month ago, thought it was just a one off but it seems a lot of people are suffering with W8 serial no machines, including the G4 17 "powerbooks.

Count me in. Just to add that's not a problem only with the w8 serials.
My early 2006 iMac (bought in france, came from ireland) serial CK60 just showed a pink vertical line yesterday. Now I'm afraid... I live in Brazil now and Apple stuff tends to be more expensive here.

Similar problem here. A single vertical line and a huge vertical black block on the right side of the display. Out of warranty for just two months!!

I am glad I found this post. I was doing research for buying a new iMac. I have been a apple user since 1982 and a mac user since 1984. I have had really good luck with Apple in the past. I once had a monitor that they had to replace 6 times.
But I see that Apple isnt the same on the support side anymore. If it is a known issue they should be fixing it apple care or not. In any case i will be lurking to see how they end up resolving this. Guess I can hold off a while before upgrading.
