Per Apple Care: reset SMC to attempt remedy of battery:
Posted: Feb 7, 2008 10:23 AM

Yes I drained mine (1.8 SSD) to 0 and let it go to sleep. Then let it sit with nothing over night. When I plugged in the charger (with lid shut) the MBA turned on. Uh, I opened it and It had lost its clock (said it was 12/31/2000--with a warning) and was unable to find my home network. I fixed that stuff and had to force quit mail and stickies to get the machine to power down...

OK, as I powered down I showed 0 battery and a 10 hour charge time (iStat and menu bar)

More than 2 hours later I checked on it. I had powered it down to charge (somebody on here said that was better than sleep mode).. So I powered it up:

21% charge in 2:15 hrs. 7:52 to go. And I have used 4 cycles in 2 days.

Called Apple Care.

A little research later: Try re-setting the SMC "system management control"

Here is how:

On the LEFT side of the keyboard: Press and hold SHIFT CONTROL and OPTION, and at the same time the POWER button. All of them at once, one solid press. Wait 5 seconds, press power and start it up.

Well, very anti-climactic as I see no change and a time frme in the low 7 hr range to charge fully. However I have to allow this charge to finish, then drain to 0 again and repeat to see if we made a difference.

I will let you all know tomorrow. You do the same...

Here is a copy of the directions, article 303319 from Apple support page

MacBook Air

-If the MacBook Air is on, turn it off.
-Connect the power adaptor to a working power source.
-On the MacBook Air keyboard, press (left) Shift-Control-Option along with the power button once.
--Note: You must use the keys on the left side of the MacBook Air keyboard.

Wait 5 seconds and press the power button to start the MacBook Air.
Apple recommends only performing an SMC reset when the MacBook Air has been properly shutdown. This prevents issues from occurring to the file system.

While the power adaptor does not need to be connected to reset the SMC, it may be necessary in situations where the battery needs charging, or the MacBook Air has been without power for an extended period of time.

Thank you,
Apple

Exact same issue with 10 hour charge time here.

No difference after resetting SMC. Am already on the third charge. This does not look good...

I have spoken to Applecare about the time it takes to charge issue and from what they have said the battery will take 8+ hours to charge the first few times, it should then normalize around the 4hr mark.

They recommended running down the battery to 0% a few times, leaving it a while before charging and then charging to 100%.

I think the people at gizmondo were correct in their review, that it took 8 hours to charge at first but then it dropped to 4hrs after an extended period of use.

Ok, I reset the SMC and took 10 hours to fully charge. then I let it die--down to 0%. Let it sit all night with nothing.

Plugged it in and it said 10hrs to charge and 6 cycles have been used. (2 a day average)

HOWEVER: 25 minutes later, the time had dropped to 2:55 minutes for full charge!! That is a nice sign. I hope it is finding it's way, and the cycles slow down (300 seems to be the cutoff for a replacement...I will be there in 5 months at this rate)

Going to watch it now... I'll repost later.

That would be nice...
Though, that happened to me - it charged fast and fine for about 10-15 minutes, then went back to the 'trickle charge' (if that's what it is) and the time to 100 jumped from 40 minutes to 3h (and sure enough, 3h later it's full......)

Good question-- I do not know a fast way, but I bet playing a movie, music or something would speed it up..

I am now at 82 % with 1:44 to go. (started at 0% with 10 hrs at 7 am, it is now 10:30 am).

Seems like it is back to charging to 80% within a few hours, then trickling in the last 20%.

Clearly has battery issues. I hope it can stretch it's legs and find itself. I do not want to exchange this, It has windows and office on it now and I hate that whole licensing issue again..

The SMC fix did change things... if all of these times are correct my 0% to 100% went from 10 hours to 5 hours after the SMC fix.

5 hours from 0% to 100% is still bad. And I have used 6 cycles in 3 days. That aint right.

GoogleEarth is a good one, too - (keeping the world moving just a bit).
The Coaster Demo. Anything that eats a lot of CPU or Graphics.

BTW, no betterment here; recharging from close to 0 still takes some 8-9 hours. Not good. I'd return and get a new one as 'defective' but I am not sure there is a good change of getting a 'good' one; after all, this is no different than even MacWorld and Gizmodo reported?

I WANT this to work. Badly. I love the MBA. But, 10h to recharge doesn't cut it....

IF you have the super drive, try using handbreak. If not try a program like Mathmatica or anything that's going to really work the processor. play a video or

True, this is what the reviews had mentioned. I called the Apple Store and they said they can swap out the battery at the store.. I may give it a try, it is a way to further the trouble shooting.

Did you reset the SMC? I did, and as of right now I am about to hit 100% in just over 5 hours. (started at 0%). It took 10 hours before the SMC. If I can cut it down to 3 or 4 I would assume that would be about normal.

But the cycles and the actual time of use I have yet to monitor. I am curious with a full charge how long I can actually use MS Word and basic internet. I hope to find out today as I am about to do a lot of research/writing. (but I may go to Apple Store first)..

I'll keep posting. Hopefully this helps somebody.

Yeah, I tried SMC - no change.

Having said that - of the 2 systems I am testing with, ONE now 'works': I let both go down to about 5% (but did NOT let them 'die' / go to 0 this time). Then plugged in power. Sure enough, charges (almost done) in LESS than 3h. No matter if ON or aSLEEP.
It almost seems the process breaks when going down 0 ?!

They obviously have the 'capacity' to charge fine and fast. There is something that seems to break the process at times....

I had the same problem. The MBA said it was done charging with only 96% full. So I drained the battery, let it sit for 5 hours overnight. Plugged it in this morning at 10am, and it's now 4pm. Only at 60% charge with another 4 hours remaining. I called AppleCare and they told me to reset SMC. I did that, now it says 2 hours to charge remaining, down from 4.

I'll repost tomorrow and let you know if this helped at all.

I plugged the computer in at 7:30pm EST with 3% remaining charge. It's now 10:30 EST.

Results:
Resetting the SMC didn't help.
45% Charged 5:24 Until Full

By my calculation, that's 8.5 hours. Just like everyone else who is having this problem. APPLE FIX THIS PROBLEM. How did this get past your QA? Seriously...

A very sad day in Michigan

After repeated attempts to re-calibrate, re-setting the SMC, etc. in the past 11 days I have given up; 10+ hours to charge, only 1 1/2 hours of battery life and 10 battery cycles later I called Apple Support this morning and it's being returned for a refund.

I'll most likely shed a tear when I put the "old girl" back in the box tonight for shipmment, but it's for the best. Kind of like kicking that really hot girl to the curb because you knew in the long run she'd ruin your life unless she changed and you knew deep down she wouldn't

Here's hoping that these battery issues get resolved.
