10.5.2 kills DVD Player, and in turn, sound and Mail too
Posted: Feb 11, 2008 9:31 PM

All was fine with the updates until I tried to open DVD Player, which froze everything. Spinning beachball, but no ability to force quit and all action in the background hangs. After a force restart, no sound is available (the icon is greyed-out and there's a little "no" circle under it) and Mail returns to its default state (i.e. no mail).

I was able to replicate this by clean installing, then trying it again—all was clean and running fine until the same result by opening DVD Player and having to force restart. No sound again and no mail (and obviously, no DVD Player). I was watching a DVD last night on 10.5.1 with no problems.

Same situation, same machine (although with 1.25GB RAM), and same ugly behavior. DVD Player freezes with spinning beach ball whether there's a disc inserted or not. The menu (DVD Player, File, Edit, etc...) loads but that's as far as it gets before the beach ball starts a-spinnin'. All was well under 10.5.1. Watched a DVD on it just a few days ago.

I was hoping to watch a few movies on my plane trip this week. Apple wants me to read a book instead. (Apple always has my best interest in mind.)

Same problem here. Opening DVD Player causes the crash. Only recovery seems to be a forced reboot...

Same thing with my 12" PB and DVD player. I also logged in as a Guest user to see if this was a User or Systemic issue. The problem occurred under Guest user as well.

Yes, I found that to be the same on my machine as well. I am guessing it has to do with graphics drivers, but am not sure.

Has any one tried installing just 10.5.2 sans the Graphics update? Does that help?

Alternatively, I've noticed a iLife support update 8.2. Has anyone tried that to see if it resolves the issue somehow?

As for me, I am back on 10.5.1. I don't have time to do a full diagnosis this week or next...just wish it worked out of the box.

Not to rant, but Apple's bug testing seemed a little better prior to the iPhone. I wonder if enterprise resources are being misdirected...

The iLife support update did not fix the problem for me.

Astroprof, did you have the same problem on all of your machines or just your G4 PowerBook? I'm curious if this is tied to a particular hardware configuration.

Sorry -- I haven't done the update on any of the others yet. I'll post back if I have problems when I do.

I did not have this problem on my G4 Quicksilver tower with 10.5.2 (including the graphics and iLife updates)...just the PowerBook 12" 1.5. I've restored 10.5.1 from external clone, and plan to combo update to 10.5.2 without the two other updates and see if DVD player still crashes.

Me too...I only have this problem on my 12" PowerBook (1.5 GHz) and not my G5 tower.

I'm having the same problem. I've tracked it down to the Leopard Graphics Update. 10.5.2 does work with DVD Player (at least on my 12" PB).

We've localized the DVD Player crash to the Leopard Graphics Update on the PB 12":

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1392927

I've had to do a reinstall of 10.5.x updates. The iLife Support 8.2 appears to be ok. Stay away from the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0.

I also reinstalled 10.5.2 from the combo-updater, twice. And all the other updates after that.
12" 1.33 PB. VLC works.
