Mac OS X 10.5.2 AirPort/D-Link DIR-625 802.11n workaround: drop to b/g
Posted: Feb 13, 2008 7:43 PM

A number of posters have reported difficulties connecting to their D-Link DIR-625 wireless routers after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.2.

Most of these same posters have reported that disabling 802.11n mode and using the router in 802.11b/g only mode restores connectivity.

This may be an incompatibility between D-Link's implementation of the 802.11n draft standard and Apple's implementation of a later version of the draft standard.

This post exists to document the workaround and as a suggestion to others having difficulties with other vendors' 802.11n routers to try the same workaround.

If you have success doing the same with another vendor's router, please reply below.

In the mean time, if you are an affected D-Link customer, you may want to contact D-Link customer service to inquire about the issue while Apple engineers investigate.

I too found that dropping back to g restored my connection, however, after reading some of the other posts I tried a fix that gets N working again. Go into the settings for the router. Choose the "Advanced" tab at the top and then the "Advanced Wireless" at the left. Change the RTS Threshold to 2306 and the Fragmentation Threshold to 2306. Go to the "Setup" tab and then choose "Wireless Settings" at the left. Change back to "Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g, and 802.11b". Then choose "Save Settings". The router will reboot.
After performing this my Macbook connected again. This is with a D-Link Dir625 router.

I can confirm that this fix works for me. I have the same DIR-625 Router and I'm using a MacBook Pro with 10.5.2

Sorry for the silly question, but how do you disable 802.11n mode?

William,

You are a super stud and my hero!!!

Thank you for this solution. How in the world did you come up with it? Do you foresee needed to switch the thresholds back to the originals which for me we both 2346?

Thanks,
Marcantonio

The D-Link DIR-625 RangeBooster N Router has both a Revision A and a Revision C version out in the wild. For rev. A, there are 5 different versions of firmware <http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=501&pv=107&sec=0> with the latest being v. 1.09. For rev. C, there are 4 different versions of firmware <http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=501&pv=108&sec=0> with the latest being v. 3.05.

It would be a good idea to check your router for the latest firmware revision. For more info, checkout D-Link's site: <http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=501&sec=0#firmware>

I have the DIR-625 H/W Version A2 which comes with 1.09 pre-installed. It still had the same problem starting with the 10.5.2 update. The solution posted above, manipulating the thresholds, fixed the symptoms for me.

I pulled my hair out about this same problem-- for several hours-- before finding this post. The work around worked perfectly for me, too. Now my MBP running Leopard is well-connected wirelessly to my DIR-625 router.

Thank you, very much.

This really just fixes the problem at home. Now when I try to use Wifi anywhere else my laptop won't connect.

I also had to register (what a hassle! Apple, you can do better than that...). No matter what, the fix worked like a charm on my D-Link DIR-635.
