ESPN.com crashes Safari and Firefox

I have espn.com set as my "home" page in both Safari and Firefox. tonight, all of a sudden, I cannot launch either browser, because they hang - with the "color wheel" (thinking) icon spinning forever while trying to load the page. The only way I could get a browser to function was to shut off my Internet connection, launch the browser and reset the home page to www.google.com., then restart the connection. And, if I use either browser to navigate to ESPN.com, it still behaves the same. I run both Internet Explorer and Firefox on the PC partition of the Mac (A MacBook Pro 17") and both work flawlessly with the same process.
Any thoughts?

I've noticed this, too.... starting today (actually, just started this afternoon). Seems like any page that with lots of Flash stuff on it causes Safari and Firefox to hang. Very annoying. Glad to know it's not just me.

I am glad to see others are having this problem. I also have espn as homepage on safari and am unable to get browser to open. It is a pain. But at least I am not the only one suffering. thankfully my firefox browser is set to a different home page

I want to clarify the point I was not clear about at the end of the post - espn.com loads perfectly in both IE and Firefox on the Windows side of the box, so while it may be related to an "object" such as Flash, etc....it is really a Mac OS incompatibility. It staggers me that any browser running on any OS would not be able to load a site as common as espn.com.

this has started happening to me too. Youtube crashes also. Turning off plugins allows for me to browse, but I'd really like to have flash (?) working.

This is happening to me as well. I had just installed a new beta of 1password before this started happening, though I'm thinking that it's coincidental. I've had Camino, Safari and Webkit have all hung on espn and some other java-heavy pages.
Unfortunately, I have no answers...

The key seems to be unchecking "allow plugins" in the Safari preferences. Espn.com, macrumors.com, testmy.net, and sportsline.com all seem to work after doing that. I have the same issue occurring on 3 different Macs running 10.5.2, so it must be some sort of software update on the web page end that is causing the issue on some sites. I suspect it is a problem with the advertisements linked to the sites. Otherwise, I am at a loss at what can cause problems in Safari at so many different websites.

I've just spent the last two hours repeating the problem and try to find a solution. (Deleting Flash, Quicktime, Cashes, Java, and reinstalling etc.)
Haven't found a work around yet, other than not going to ESPN.com. I believe it is ESPN.com. (I did this test on two different systems and in both cases it was ESPN.com that was the cause.)
However, you can fix the hanging/crashing issue with other sites (YouTube.com, etc.) if you reinstall Quicktime.
To do so, go to Macintosh HD > Library > Internet Plug-ins
Delete
nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt
QuickTime Plugin.plugin
QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
Then download Quicktime and reinstall. You will have to restart.
After that you will be able to visit other sites, without issue.
BUT do not go back to ESPN.com or you will have to reinstall Quicktime again.

It may be ESPN.com, except it is localized to Mac OS, because the site works flawlessly for me on both my Boot Camp Windows partition and on my work Dell Windows laptop.

I have no problems with any of those other sites, just ESPN (Safari or Firefox). Disallowing plugins does the trick in Safari, so far no workaround for Firefox -- maybe if I had Flashblock?
