Ipod Calendar and Contact Sync Issues?!!!

Quick note:
Itunes 7.6.1
Ipod 1.1 (latest)
OS X 10.5.2
Hi guys,
I have a 3rd generation ipod nano (4GB). It has been working fine since January but it has had trouble in the last month. I noticed about two weeks ago that my ipod nano had no contacts and no calendar events on it. I went into itunes and it was set to sync all contacts and calendars. It just wouldn't sync them. The ipod had over 2GB available free space. Software is all updated.
Unclicking and reclicking the settings didn't work, so I did unset and unplugged, etc etc. Nothing worked.
So I reformatted the ipod completely. That fixed the problem for awhile but not a week later it's started up again. when I go to my ipod it says it can only sync 21 of my contacts because:
"Only limited portion of your contacts could be loaded due to the amount of content on this ipod."
The ipod has 2.5GB available this time! None of the calendars are synced at all. It syncs my music no problem..
So what the heck is going on and what can I do?! I'm out of ideas.

Hi,
I got exactly the same problem and in addition I cannot sync because of an unknown error (-39).

I sync'd again this morning and it has now removed the last of my contacts on the ipod. Once again, it made no mention of there not being enough space or anything like that.
Help appreciated.

Not sure if this will be of any help, but I can get different results by restarting my ipod (hold center + menu) and waiting on the extras' screen before entering either the calendar or contacts sections. either way its ridiculous and I've heard it has something to do with a RAM problem. thus the longer you wait on that screen the more events / contacts are filled in.... not sure though. the nano is still very buggy.

A quick update:
I turned off synching my calendars a day or two ago. I tried turning it back on again today (hoping it might fix the calendars) but on my first attempt at synching after I turned it back on said: "The settings were not saved for the ipod "xyz" because it could not be found. It was clearly plugged in freshly and itunes recognized it.
So I tried again and it worked. Even though I rechecked the calendars (contacts was left checked the entire time) it somehow reset everything and put my contacts and calendars back on..
This doesn't solve my problem because this has happened before... What is going on?

This is a known issue with the current iPod nano firmware. Nothing is going to 'solve' it but an update from Apple. However, it's not nearly as serious as it seems. After you sync your Calendars and Contact (and Notes, they are affected by this issue, too), they often will not appear, but a simple reset will always 'refresh the iPod's memory'. (And you do that by turning the hold switch on and then off, and then holding down the centre button and menu button simultaneously for about 10 seconds until the iPod reboots.)
This is not actually an issue with Contacts or Calendars failing to sync. It's an issue with the iPod failing to recognise that they've been synced. A simple reset always solves it in my case and many others.

Thank you!
The suggestion to reboot it helped me solve the problem, I was just searching for a solution but your comment makes sense, until Apple solves it with a firmware update this is just an unnecessary workaround.
Thanks again!

Thanks. I was having this same problem. I just reset the iPod and re-synced it, but next time I notice this issue, I will try your solution. I really hope Apple issues a firmware update that fixes this soon. I'm assuming they've already been notified of this being an issue.

Update 1.1.2 has not helped my nano either. Contacts and calenders are not transferred to the nano.
I've tried all the recommended fixes and none have helped. Very frustrated. Help us o, great apple!

At first, I thought the 1.1.2 update fixed the issue, but I am still having problems. Tried several times to restore the ipod, reset it, all that stuff. It's very frustrating. I don't really need the calendars on it, but it's a nice feature because of the reminders that pop up. I can't believe Apple can't/hasn't fixed this yet. I'm sure some people really rely on a feature like this and it's unacceptable that it doesn't work properly.

Just noticed something. Assuming the Nano is enabled for disk mode, you can go into the iPod and see the Calendars folder. Inside are the .ics files for each calendar synched. I noticed that the date modified on each one is current, i.e. the same time and date as the most recent sync. So, it appears that the calendars are getting copied to the iPod, but for some reason, they just don't show up in the Calendars on the iPod itself.

As mentioned earlier, I can apparently work around the issue by resetting the iPod (hold center button and menu button). The contacts or calendars may appear blank after it resets but they do come back after a few seconds.

I have tried numerous times to do a reset and it does not seem to help at all. Before the 1.1.2 software, I could reset it and it would show the calendars, but not now. Very frustrating!!! At this point, I have just turned off the calendar and contact synching. I don't know what to do. Is the iPod defective? Everything else works just fine. i.e. music, video, podcasts, tv shows, games... It's still under warranty, maybe I should bring it to the Apple Store.

I would bet it's a firmware problem and it would happen on any brand new iPod perhaps depending on the exact contents of your calendars & address book. Other people tried getting the iPod replaced and it still happens.
