SLOW WIRELESS FIX!!!!
Posted: Mar 13, 2008 10:33 AM

i was having issues with safari and firefox taking forever to load pages. sometimes they wouldnt even load at all and id get a roadrunner "cannot find server" message.

i pinned this to be a dns translation issue.

here is how i fixed it.

go to network prefs>advanced>dns and add this in the dns server box: 208.67.222.222
in the search domain box add this: 208.67.220.220

these are open dns servers. this has fixed my issue and i am back to smoking fast internet. i hope to god this helps some people.

That isn't really "fixing" the issue in Leopard, it's just replacing whatever DNS servers you were using from your ISP to the speedier OpenDNS ones.

With that being said, I usually pop in the OpenDNS numbers into any machine I use. I find them to be faster and more reliable than most of the default ones ISPs provide.

Good tip nonetheless!

Its a good tip, and solved my problem of extremely slow internet, but it's still just a work around, i'd love a real fix.

The problem i have with opendns is that if you type a url without a '.com', instead of appending it automatically, it comes up with an opendns page saying it cant be found.

yeah i did word that wrong, but oh well.

a real fix is on the way im sure. it seems to be a problem with leopard receiving the translation from my isp. not sure if it is related to leopard and my router, or if it is related to leopard and the isp.

wasnt aware of the .com annoyance.

im just glad my internet isnt creeping anymore

so, this worked for me too. Now, I know almost nothing about the way the internets work, so somebody please figure this out...what is "broken" that putting in one set of DNS servers makes your internet crawl, but another doesn't? It's not a problem with the servers themselves; we've got a Windows machine that has no slowdown whatsoever, but the Macbook does. Don't know for certain that it correlates with 10.5.2, but it has started at some point since that update.

it actually is a problem with the servers - and when they are updated to current technology they will work - basic it is a legacy code issue and Apple updated Leopard to newer processes and left out the legacy code (like why Classic not longer works and Sherlock no longer works)

Time moves on and technology does too - if you search the forums there is a detailed explanation as to what changed that I do not remember - I'm personally just happy to have it working and will stay with the OPEN DNS that works

i went to school for networking. ill try to explain this in a way it makes sense. basically, when you type in "yahoo.com" there is no yahoo.com. your computer connects to an ip address that is associated to yahoo.com. so, your computer has to translate yahoo.com into an ip address, which is yahoo's. to do this, it uses something called DNS(domain name server). your isp will act as the server for you. if you use a router, your router will connect to the modem and to your isp and receive the translation. this is where the problem is occurring in leopard. it is either having a hard time with compatibility to routers, to the isp, or both. so, using the opendns servers allows you to get the translation from them instead, which bypasses it having to come back to your computer. hope that helps.

Actually the problem is with the outdated DNS servers that do not respond properly to SVR requests

Summary
The DNS resolver in Leopard has been changed to first attempt SRV requests for lookups initiated by the getaddrinfo() function. If the user’s DNS server drops these requests the DNS lookup may take an extended period of time to complete (30 seconds to several minutes) as Leopard tries different domain requests and eventually falls back to making an A record request. This can result in application freezes or timeouts, as was occurring with Jungle Disk

See this detailed description for more than I care to know about it - http://blog.jungledisk.com/2007/10/31/leopard-dns-issues-and-work-around/

i was not aware they had pinned that issue. that is good to know. i kinda figured it was on the isp's end but i wasnt sure. i still think there might be a corrupted file issue from the last update they made. i think there might be a dns issue within leopard itself, but that is my opinion. and i say this because it was working fine till the last update. i would think if there was honestly isp issues, the issue would have happened since leopard came out. unless of course, in the last update, they updated their dns to newer standards which is causing the issue. i will take a look at those other threads.

it happened to me with 10.5 when I moved my computer form my home in Northern California (using Comcast) to my home in Southern California (using Cox Cable) - it still does not work with COX but since I like Open DNSI am using it in both locations now - to me it seems even faster than the Comcast that works fine)

hm...thanks for all the info! I'll read the explanation, to see if I get it a little better (if not...who cares...the OpenDNS servers work fine!) I knew that the "yahoo.com" name wasn't the actual address, but didn't think about the fact that the problem might be in the translation step. So if I understand it correctly, Leopard uses up-to-date translation methods, and my DNS (roadrunner, through Time Warner) hasn't been updated to play nicely with the newer methods...

Does it surprise me AT ALL that Time Warner/RoadRunner is behind the times??? Hahaha

Since you guys are all so computer savvy and s**t, anyone want to point me to a thread explaining why Time Machine use over my network shuts down my network? I got TM working to a network-attached HD using info from here: http://www.flokru.org/2008/02/29/time-machine-backups-on-network-shares-in-leopard/

I got it working, but after hours of uploading (gigabytes of data), something happens, and when I return to the computer, there's no error message, but the network is dead and the backup wasn't completed. Any thoughts (point me in the right direction, so I don't hijack this thread....)

I'd suggest that posting in the time machine forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1227 - would be good (and hijacking wireless threads for TM questions is a bad idea ;) )

In general I hear (don't use it myself) that TM does not play well with wireless except time capsule but do not know anything from personal experience

thanks for the quick reply. I've tried looking for the problem there with little luck; was hoping that as this thread was very active and VERY helpful, I'd give it a shot. You're right about TM with wireless, but I had it working before 10.5.2 and it's very frustrating to have it "broken" now. Again, sorry for the hijack...

This fixed the problem -- or at least masked it. As another poster said, I worry that messing with the DNS is a workaround and there is something more nefarious underneath that will pop up to hit us another time. I have the latest Tiger. REQUEST: Anyone with this problem, PLEASE report it to Apple. Tech support said there weren't many if any calls on this, but that he'd log mine in case others came in; a critical mass sends it up to Engineering.

HISTORY: March 14 I couldn't access the internet from this computer, though I could from Windows machines in our home wireless system. Called Cox (naturally not suspecting Apple first off), spent almost two hours doing all things possible -- but since direct Ethernet access allowed them to ping me, it was clearly an Apple thing. Called Apple (I have AppleCare since my life depends on this computer), waited 1.5 hours on speakerphone -- turned out this was the "call of the day" and tech was busy with it. I hadn't updated Airport Utility as prompted earlier in the week (my bad), thus this problem. Known. Did the update. Wham! Slowwwwwwww. Not just my computer, but ALL the computers (five, two Macs, three windows -- one soon to be replaced by a new Mac). Called Apple today. Tech couldn't find recent blogs post-Airport update. Zapped PRAM. Emptied caches. Emptied Library Caches. Etc. No luck. Found this lovely board. Changed DNSs. Back to normal. Still nervous.
