Screen corruption after resuming from sleep on new Penryn MBPs
Posted: Mar 13, 2008 2:26 PM

Has anyone seen anything like this before? After resuming from sleep on two separate occasions (using my week-old MacBook Pro 15" Penryn), I have opened the display panel to find that the computer was unusable and with some weird screen displays:

http://img245.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mg2749smallqe5.jpg
http://img164.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mg2751smallmt9.jpg

When it gets into this state, the system displays really weird jagged edges and artifacts where menus should normally be. The system is somewhat functional; the mouse cursor moves normally, but everything else on the machine runs super-slowly. I can sometimes activate other processes and programs, but the system seems to pause for about 3 seconds, perform a small amount of actual "work" (like running existing apps or launching new programs), pause for another ~3 seconds, repeating infinitely.

The case pictured above was actually the better of the two times it happens. The second time (which I was unable to capture in photos), most of the entire screen was scrambled. In both cases, menus (or where menus should appear) seem to be more "scrambled" than the rest of the system. The second time it happened, the only thing on the screen that remains clear/consistent is the mouse pointer. I was able to move it around, but I basically could not do anything with the computer because of the extreme slowness of the entire system. I was able to fix it via a reboot.

I have already reset the PRAM and SMC. This only seems to happen after resuming from sleep mode with the lid closed. It happens on a random basis and I cannot figure out how to reproduce it.

Any ideas? Hardware? Software? Both? Am I just blessed with bad luck with the new MBPs?

I've had the same problem a few times I think, although the corruption is a lot worse than in the attached photos. Next time I'll try to take some photos. I usually get blocky colours all over the screen, but the cursor is still perfect, the only thing that is. The blocks move in response to trying to use the system, it's obvious the system is still running behind the corruption, but it 'works' for a bit, then beach balls for a bit, as described above.

I'm not sure if it's related but I always have vmware running when it happens, but then I always have vmware running regardless.

I've got a new multitouch macbook pro (2.4ghz, geforce 8400M GT 256mb) for what it's worth, completely up to date software wise.

I've got the exact same problem on my brand new 15" MacBook Pro. I feel like the issue seems to happen more when the computer is extremely low on battery when it is woken from sleep.

I am about to return my laptop due to a number of problem, screen corruption being one of them. The corruption has appeared in random pop up windows in some programs (where the window is fully corrupted but the rest of the screen is fine) such as After Effect but also when returning from sleep, varying part of the screen appears corrupted. The first pic below shows one version of the corruption and the second shows a much more extreme version which I experienced today - this jumbled mess was screen-wide with no part of the screen being remotely legible. Putting it back to sleep and reopening didn't solve the problem but a restart did with the last version. Temporarily though since it seems fairly consistent.

On top of having the vertical line issue, varying freezes which require forcing the computer to restart once a day, I believe this machine is a lemon and the most unreliable Apple I have had. Argh.

I've had similar issues ever since I installed Leopard. Most of the time it's just 'artifacts', skewed bits of windows, dialogs, etc. Sometimes they are spectacular video crashes which I cannot take shots of because the whole OS has gone down. I'm using an external monitor that simply goes blank on occasion as well. Note I'm using the first of the Intel MBPs, not a new one. The dot three update on Leopard appears to address some graphics issues, but nothing clear on it. Also, even after doing the update, I'm having the same issues,.

A couple weeks ago I took my computer out of sleep and the screen "turned off" - the backlight turned off but I could still see that the LCD itself was on. Kinda scary. I did a reboot and it fixed it, never happened again.

In responding to another thread I looked up resetting the SMC on a MacBook and discovered that it may be responsible for a good deal of graphics anomalies, including the backlighting not responding. We might try this:

This is quite disturbing. I am actually considering a custom 17'' macbook pro purchase but reports like this are scaring me and putting me off. Honestly I'm afraid to buy one. A google search with "macbook pro display corruption" as search string returns awfully many complaints of the same form.

I already have 2 macs and both of them have choppy animations (dashboard and dock) but nothing severe as this.

Mario, keep in mind, you're only going to see the complaints, not the millions of totally satisfied users and problem free laptops. Few will get up on a discussion board like this and proclaim their computer problem free. That said, I consider this a minor issue. I've had Macs since 1986 (512KE, "Fat Mac") and have uniformly found them to be more trouble free than the best PC. I wouldn't hesitate to buy that 17" lapzilla. In fact, as soon as the anticipated newly designed MacBook Pro hits the streets, I'll be selling this one for that one. My point is, don't be troubled by what you read here. We're problem solving, not representing the vast majority of happy Mac users.

I have a 1st gen intel imac running 10.5.3 and am experiencing the same issue especially after waking from sleep. It occurred occasionally in 10.5.1, never in 10.5.2 and returned with 10.5.3. Full reboot is only solution I've found.

So what's the solution to this? Would resetting the SMC resolve this? This happened to me twice already with the last one triggered by opening PhotoBooth and experienced the ugly phenomenon again. This has only happened when I updated to 10.5.3.

This was #1.

And #2 after I tried opening PhotoBooth (so random).

When I showed this issue to the Genius bar he suspected it was something to do with the video memory. My machine also crashes every couple of days as well and the problem is certainly in the logic board according to the crash reports. I recommend taking your laptops into Apple to have them look at them as well. If it IS a hardware issue which in my case it is (and I have produced the exact same problem as a number of you in this thread), then you obviously want it sorted.

In just a final comment on this issue, my 2.5 year old MBP had this happen with an increasing degree of frequency. It finally died to the point it could not be booted from an OS DVD. I've moved on to a black MacBook, which suits my current needs well. The lesson here is to download some fan monitoring software and make sure that your fans are working properly. If not, either take it into Apple fast, or get it repaired fast. I failed to do either until there was apparently severe degradation to the graphics board. Of the dozen or so Macs I've owned this is the only one that has fried. While I could point a finger at Apple for what apparently is/was an issue with the fans in the MBP, I have to shoulder the blame for not fixing it in a timely fashion. Lesson learned.
