Remote Disc Install stalling / reinstallation experiences
Posted: Mar 15, 2008 1:04 PM

Hai,

it was long ago I had such an unpleasant Mac experience.

My MBA arrived, and I decided to transfer all user data from a TimeMachine backup of my previous MacBook Pro on a USB drive. That was okay, the MBA startet with alle my environment, at shutdown I said I could free unused space in FileVault. Then it crashed during the FileVault cleanup operation. Thereafter, I could not log at all, because the FileVault was broken.

So, I tried to install freshly via Remote Disc... At the first attempt, I could not get onto my WLAN network using my WPA key... Then I remembered from Linux and Windows to use an American keyboard layout (Z is displaced with Y at the German keyboard)... Nice.

Next, booting the MBA just hang..... Until I found aout that it had no external power. Just hangs, even if the battery is full, with no message...

Nxt, I was told that the installation of fresh OSX (why is it the old 10.5.1?) would take 13 hours via remote disk on a G-class WLAN. I let it run overnight, and the installation crashed with some strange Dylan errors.

I tried to buy the external SuperDrive, but is seems to be unavailable in northern Germany. Also the USB ethernet dongle.

At the moment, it runs another attempt, still having hours to go.

Seems not to be such a mature product, so far.

Update: In the middle of the OSX installation from DVD1, the MBA says it forgot the WPA WLAN keys and it would like me to re-enter it. So I re-enter it, but it says it was wrong. So I tried it with another Y-Z keymapping switch, and that worked. The OSX installer on MBA silently changed its keyboard layout mapping during installation......

What I nightmare.

Update:; reinstall worked after days if runtime.
I think I have to reconsider about usage of FileVault.
