How would you move software updates to a new server?

Hi,
I've posted about this issue before, but have had no luck trying things myself and would really appreciate some help.
Here's what's happened so far....
- software update server installed which downloaded xxx amount of files
- files in usr/share/swupd/html were backed up to external drive
- machine crashed and re-install took place
From here I've tried the following...
1. directly replaced swupd/htm directory of newly started SUS with backed up directory -> after restarts it appeared in server admin that no files had been 'downloaded' or where present in the SUS directory
2. followed apple's instructions for deleting SUS folder in terminal and creating a symbolic link to a new storage location -> this also appeared to show that no files had been 'downloaded' or where present in the SUS directory
Getting to the end of my tether with this as there is no other info out there that I could find on solving this issue, yet I find it hard to believe that it isn't possible.
Thanks in advanced,
Nige

Hi
Its a shame this has not worked for you. It never worked for me and neither did the symbolic link. FWIW the easiest, simplest solution is to start the service on the new server and let it download the whole lot all over again.
It would be great if someone out there has managed to get it to work, somehow I don't think so. Of all the Services that Apple could have really improved upon from 10.4 this was the one. From what I've seen so far its exactly the same only slightly worse.

hi tony,
thanks for the feedback, at least someone else has tried to make this work. it's such a pain that there is no easy, or known, way to achieve this.it's not as if we're asking too much or that the task is obscure. i mean, who in there right mind can afford to re-download the whole set if the machine fails or they swap the service to another server?
oh well life goes on, we just lose a little more faith in apple,
