MacBook Pro & Latest Airport Update Problem

Hi, I just ran the software update and installed the latest Airport update - AirPort Extreme Update 2008-001 for Tiger , and it's conflicting with my system, giving me CPU spikes...everything was fine before I installed the latest update. Is there a way I can go back to what was previously there? How do I install the older Airport files?

If you don't have a backup you can restore, then the only way to revert to your previous system is the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Thanks for the reply, but I figured out a much easier solution! I just downloaded the Pacifist trial located @ http://www.charlessoft.com , I then downloaded the previous Airport Extreme Update, 2007-004 located @ http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremeupdate2007004.html. Then I installed the Pacifist trial, and replaced the file "IO80211Family.kext" that's currently installed from the 2008-001 update with the older one inside the 2007-004 update .pkg. Worked like a charm! No more CPU spikes!
Thanks again though.

Thank you thank you thank you!
I was having a ridiculously tough time figuring out why my Digidesign Pro Tools set up was not working like it did a few weeks ago. I followed your advice and now all is good again. You're a genius! It would be great if you could walk everyone through the precise steps, though. It's not entirely intuitive how you grab the old file and move it to where the newer one lives.
Thanks again!

It's my understanding that the last Airport Extreme update was a firmware update.

Check your firmware version for the Airport Extreme card. If it's version 1.3.5 then your firmware was updated.

I too can't figure out how to replace the 2008 .kext file with the 2007 one... I downloaded it and opened it with Pacifist, then tried installing it, but still had CPU spikes...
Is there an easy way to replace one .kext with the other that I'm not understanding?

Nevermind... I got it. (it was the restart that got me... duh)
For those reading who don't know what to do..
1. Go to Mac HD > System > Library > Extensions and drag the current IO80211Family.kext into the trash (it should be around 2.6MB)
2. drag the .kext from the 2007 pkg folder in Pacifist into the Extensions folder (this .kext should be 1.2 MB)
3. Restart your computer
and Sig.. following these steps changes your firmware from a 1.3.5 back to a 1.1.9.3
Peace all

The same thing happened to me, albeit worse. I can see my own Network but I keep getting error messages when trying to connect. And when I used Network Diagnostics it tells me that the network that I want to join requieres a password when patently it doesn't... my network is NOT password protected. What a crock of ****! Why do they release these updates with no way of reversing them?

Thanks ernestseeker!!! That worked a treat. It's good to be connected once again... phew! But I still maintain that it's a crock of **** that there's no other way to reverse a faulty update without the use of a third-party app.
Thanks again

What's interesting is the version of IO80211Family.kext that is in the Extensions folder now is version 1.6.3 dated July 30, 2007. Is that the correct file?

I just had to fix this problem. I followed the steps above by downloading the file from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremeupdate2007004.html.
I did a restart and checked system profile and my airport firmware version was back to 1.1.9.3 and the CPU overload problem went away. ( Pro-Tools 7.4 LE )
Step 1. Download Airport Firmware From Above Link
Step 2. Then I installed the Pacifist trial, and replaced the file "IO80211Family.kext" that's currently installed from the 2008-001 update with the older one inside the 2007-004 update .pkg. There were a few files transfered.
Step 3. I then installed the program from the above link ( I added This Step For The Heck Of It )
Step 4. I did a restart and checked system profile and my airport firmware version was back to 1.1.9.3 and the CPU overload problem went away.
