software updates from server
Posted: Mar 29, 2008 9:34 AM

Hi
I have setup a mac mini as a standalone server with services for web hosting, ftp etc. I have a macbook pro and an imac that I want to enable to search the server for apple software updates.

How do I setup the settings in those 2 machines to look to the mac os server that has software update as a running service?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi

A good place to start is reading the Admin Manual:

http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/System_Imaging_and_SW_Update_Admin_v10.5.pdf

You may find this link helpful also:

Assuming that you have DNS and Software Update running on the Mini, you can then use the following command on each workstation to override software update. Type this in Terminal as the admin user. This will effect all accounts on the machine.

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://fqdn:8088/"

Replace the fqdn with the fully qualified domain name. Also, 8088 assumes that you have not altered the port configuration on the server. In some cases in Leopard (mostly in .local domains), you will need to add index.sucatalog to the end of the address. For example,

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://host.domain.local:8088/index.sucatalog"

You can get away with using IP address instead of fqdn in 10.4 but in 10.5 it is a little tricky. If you screw this up, simply throw away the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist file located in /Library/Preferences.

Hope this helps

Hi Strontium90,

does this mean then that with Leopard server you need to have the DNS configured for SUS to work to unmanaged clients?

Hi

I can't think of any configuration for Leopard Server that does not involve DNS apart from enabling AFP service and nothing else. Even this will benefit from having DNS configured and enabled.

Leopard Server Standard Mode: DNS is configured by the Setup Assistant as is Open Directory amongst other things. Workgroup Mode: this assumes DNS is on another server and appropriate records have been configured. Advanced Mode: Do it yourself basically. If DNS is not configured or enabled the logs will repeatedly tell you DNS is not set or is broken and the server does not have or know its own hostname. For me the log moaning about this is not a problem as enabling AFP and nothing else does not need DNS. However for others the log filling up with these messages could be alarming.

I posted something regarding SUS for 10.4 Server. I think it still applies in a general sense for 10.5. You may find it helpful? Apologies for telling you something you already know.

you can also download the tool

software update enabler, it is a simple gui that will allow you to enter the server you wish to update from.
this should be run on each client.
i copied to applications for further use, it is a little simpler than going to terminal

can be downloaded from apple site
