Multiple vertical lines and big white vertical block on my imac

Hi My imac core duo from early 2006 has been developing vertical lines on the screen over the last few months. while quite annoying they were all located on one of the extremes of the display. Last week a big white block made its appearance in the centre of the display rendering it mostly useless. the imac is out of warranty and after some research online I found that multiple people are experiencing exactly the same problem - mccann forums have quite a few threads on this and they all seem to point to machines whose serial number starts with W8604 - just like mine. What can be done to get this fixed. It is truly disappointing that a recent computer is facing such a problem!

i have same problem, 4 lines on the right side - two blue stable lines, and two blinking lines. i bought it one and half years ago, it's seems very expensive to replace new one, so i will buy an adapter, using my pc's monitor, and put the imac under my desk.
i bought one iphone from ebay just couple days before the price been cut, also i have one ipod that batteries can only hold for 3-4 hours, and now my imac got those vertical lines. i was decide buy one macbook, but now the adapter is the last thing i will buy from apple

Hi Sacesse,
does your computer also have the serial number starting with w860?
We are not alone in this problem. There are quite a lot of entries online about failing lcd's on 17" imacs - just google imac lcd problems - Apple support, I suggest you do the same, its too much coincidence that a lot of people from all around the world are complaining about the exact same problem and seem to have the same serial number on their machines!

Hi guys,
we are not alone - there are multiple entries in these forums about similar problems and they all point to computers with the W8 serial number.
It seems that these computers were assembled in the Shangai factory (?) and even the old imac g5 with similar serial numbers had problems with the lcd that resulted in apple starting a recall program (you can see this in the support page).
<Edited by Moderator>
Again the common thread is the serial number...
Factory defect seems more and more to be the cause of this problem.
Sacesse - my imac started like yours, one line, 3 lines, 7 lines and now 7 lines and the big whit block in the middle. It is just absurd that nobody at Apple is taking a look into this issue. Apple's customer service is just not up to scratch.

I can't add anything to this thread except to provide another example of a 17" verstion of a second generation iMac Serial No. beginning with QP 537 which has a failed monitor.
I now have a 2 3/8" wide verticle line down the middle of the screen which is blank. Sometimes it will actually begin flashing verticle lines in that area, sometimes it will actually fill in the proper picture signal. Mostly it is just blank.

Wassup people! I'm a new victim of the Vertical Line Assassination Squad. I've had my 17" iMac for over a year & 1/2 and today I found a single pixel length, vertical, yellow line taunting me and my screen. My serial no. begins QP63XXXXXXX and I happen to be out of my warranty range (which is so convenient...just not for me).
It's a shame that so many Apple users share the same problem and there doesn't seem to be much help available...unless you've got $700 to blow on replacing the LCD screen as if it's as easy as buying a bag of dorito's.
This is aggravating. I'm contemplating harassing an apple employee with my keyboard. See y'all when I make bail. LOL
sorry...I thought it was kinda funny.

Same here - purchased my Imac Feb '06 and my serial number starts W8602. Just yesterday I noticed this thin vertical white line (just right of the apple logo on start up)that now seems permanent.
I'm not happy about this at all.

I have the same problem, a one pixel blue line. It would appear for an hour and then dissapear for weeks at a time since the Imac was new, but would never stay long enough for me to have apple look at it. Now that it is out of warantee it stays on all the time, and has recently been joined by a yellow vertical line. My serial number is close to yours, W8633xxxxx. It's definitely a problem with the display or the output of the video "card" as you can't capture the lines with a screen image capture. I would hope apple would address this.

Hello,
i have the same problem. It just appeared. A few months later, a vertical purple line appeared on the right side of the monitor, then the dvd player stopped working, and the hard drive crashed.
I would advise you to seek assistance asap. I waited because i traveled between Europe and th U.S. on a regular basis and didn't make time to seek help.
I strongly encourage you to back up all your info and call the support line or take the machine to be looked at.
