I started a full back-up right after preparing the external USB drive. Six hours later I only have 17.57GB backed-up out of 203.47GB. Is this normal? Here is the console log below. Did I not set-up the USB drive right in Disk Util.?

The initial backup can take a lot of time, sometimes a good half-day or so. Additionally, your USB drive could be recognized as USB 1.1 or so, instead of USB 2. This could be solved by unmounting and remounting the drive, but you should be able to check the data speed in the system profile (under the USB section).

Does this show USB 1.1 or USB 2 at 12mb/sec? If would unplugging it in mid-back-up be disaster?

Good call, but yes I did. The "Time Machine" drive is in the Privacy window of Spotlight.

I'm wondering if having other USB devices plugged in the MacPro might effect the USB bus speed. I have a USB Headphone amp. and a Logitech USB cam plugged in. I am going to unplug them and see if that helps. The MacPro has several USB ports front and back, but I don't know how independent they are of each other.
I should have popped for a firewire external drive but I didn't have a MacPro at the time.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I finally unplugged all my USB devices. Reformatted the Time Machine HD, and started again. I am getting a much faster rate, probably started five or so minutes ago and I'm already over 2.60GB backed-up. I don't mind waiting awhile but at the original rate it would have taken a week;) Thanks for the responses!
