Airport Menu Bar indicator grey - but network connected

I'm typing this in the airport (Schiphol), connected to the wifi network. But the Airport activity indicator in the menu bar is greyed out, as though I'm not connected to a network at all. Any ide why this is happening, and how I can get the status indicator to accurately reflect what's going on. Network Preferences sees the network, and gives it a green light and an IP address, just not the menu bar. And when Ii click on it, I get a beachball for a while before it displays the drop-down menu...
best regards,
Matt

Hi, I just received my MacBook Air today and after setting it up and migrating my environment over from my old PowerBook G4, everything seems to be working, except...
the AirPort icon in the menu bar is displaying the empty/open pie with no signal strength, although I'm connected to the Internet just fine as I type this reply.
If I click on the icon it reports AirPort: Not configured, and displays only the Open Network Preferences... option in the menu.
I've tried going into Network Preferences and disconnecting/reconnecting, deleting my configuration and re-entering it, to no avail.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Well, I've resolved this issue for me. Another poster had reported that many users are migrating their old configurations to their new MacBook Air portables, only to find they have connectivity issues afterwards, with other anomalies noticeable. The solution was to perform a migration and UNselect the transfer Network Settings during the migration.
Two issues were affecting me after the migration. The first I mentioned above, that the AirPort connectivity icon in the top menu bar displayed an empty pie shape, and when I clicked on it it showed only that my wireless network was unconfigured, and listed the option to open Network Preferences to configure it. Unfortunately, my WiFi was working fine at that point. The second annoyance was that on reboots the MacBook Air forgot my preferred network, which forced me to manually reselect it each time.
My solution was to erase the startup partition, reinstall the MacBook Air's software from the supplied installer DVDs, and upon reboot and selecting the migration option from another Mac or volume, to be sure that the Transfer Network Settings box was unchecked before proceeding. After doing that my account and applications migrated over properly, and the Mac is now working perfectly. I did have to identify the credentials to connect to the network the first time at the end of the migration process, but that was expected since no network settings were transferred. The top menu icon is now behaving as it's supposed to and the Mac also remembers its network configuration upon restarts.
There's a second possible solution which I did not try, but may be worth a shot if you're facing a two hour reinstall anyway. If you go to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and move all those .plists to the Trash, then reboot, you may find your network configuration completely hosed, thereby giving you the chance to go into the Network Preferences control panel and reconfigure everything afresh. If anyone tries that, please post your results.

I have the complete opposite problem. I have the airport menu bar indicator in black, showing I’ connected to a hot spot, but cannot connect to the network.
Also for networks that do not request a password, are asking me for one.
Can someone help?
Thanks

If you're seeing the AirPort Signal Strength pie in the Menu bar with black bars, and a check box next to the name of the connected network in its drop down menu, then you're connected to that network. If you can't access the Internet with that connection, that means its router is not accepting your credentials and won't pass your Internet requests.
If you're sure your MacBook Air's network settings are corrupted, you can try what I've suggested above and move the .plists located at /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration to the Trash, and reboot. Once you've done that, go into System Preferences and reconfigure your Network settings. That will rebuild the .plists you moved to the Trash. One trick I've heard of, if the .plists don't immediately rebuild, is to go into Network settings, click on the gear icon at the bottom left of the window below where the available ports are listed, and select Set Service Order..., then rearrange the list into the order you want your Mac to try to connect to a network. That will force the .plists to build.
Once everything is working OK, delete the Trash. To return to your previous configuration, drag the Trash .plists back to the above folder and overwrite the changed settings.

No problem with the connected network. All that in place. Both computers on the network is good strength with the checked network, our network here at home. That's not the problem. Just that the Air can't access the shared screen of the Pro. Pro can access shared screen of Air. Weird.

Go into System Preferences/Sharing and assure File Sharing and Screen Sharing are checked on your Pro.
If that doesn't work, upgrade your Pro to MacOS X 10.5.2.
