iTunes locks up, spins beachball time thing

I have used iTunes for years and suddenly began having a problem I cannot fix. When playing music, my iTunes will lock up for 10-15 sec when changing songs. It continues playing the song but I cannot change it. I can only chaange it after 10-14 sec, when the time ball stops spinning. And if I change it, then it locks up again for another 10-15 second. With videos, it is far worse. It will play perhaps the first 5-8 sec of a movie and then lock up for 2-4 minutes. Finally, it will start playing the movie again but often it is jerky. ALSO, the movies are often screwed up on x-y. What I mean is that they are often too short or too wide, so the people come out fat and wide. I can play the same files on Quicktime without a hitch. The movie will play all the way just great and also the picture is the right x-y. I have removed and reinstalled iTunes. I have done all the permissions and disk repairs things allowed. I have even removed and rebuilt the entire iTunes library. Nothing helps and all of the above took me several hours work. I have used iTunes and Macs for years and I have never had a significant problem before. PLEASE - ANYBODY GOT AN ANSWER? I have looked through all the discussions but did not find an answer but did find another person having the same problem on a Windows computer. I use a Mac.

I tried the disk permissions but it didn't help. I have tried repairing the disks (the files are all on external disks), re-installing iTunes and even removing the iTunes library and starting over from scratch. Nothing helps. Today after work I am going to load the entire library on a backup Mac laptop and see if I get the same problem.

I have the same problem. It only started acting up after one of the latest updates. I thought it could be lastfm, or growl, or some other program talking to itunes and locking it up, but even with those programs ended it still locks up for a few seconds when i try to change tracks, pause, play, or interact with the program at all.

Your problems sound quite serious. Try reinstalling your OS. Might not be the only solutions. However, as of now, I can't think of anything.

I don't even think my minimac came with an os disk. If it did, I don't know where it is now. Reinstalling the os is a big step. What I want to try first is to install and older version of iTunes but I cannot find one. Is there a way to get a copy of iTunes back in the good old days when it actually worked?

Hi!
I am facing a very similar issue. Basically iTunes freezes for 10-20 sec all the time (when changing song or when I try to do something, like clicking on another song for instance).
I had thought that his was due to my library being too large AND on an external hard drive.
Would you say that you have been facing the problem only since you put your library on an external disk?

My library is large and on an external drive - actually on three external drives. But it has been like that for a long time and the problem only began recently. Last night I tried removing all the videos and movies, leaving only the music, which meant only a single external hard drive. It did not help. I think it is the latest iTunes upgrade but I cannot figure out how to get an old copy of iTunes to reinstall the old version that worked.

My library isn't on an external. Does anyone know where you can get an old installer for itunes? None of the versions before the last two or three had this problem on my computer.

I installed iTunes 7.4.2 and reloaded the entire library. No improvement so it was not iTunes 7.6 like I suspected. I have now done -
-
- run repairs on all drives
- fix permissions.
- removed and reinstalled iTunes 7.6 from scratch
- removed iTunes 7.6 and installed 7.4 that used to work
My next step will be to replace the minimac with a laptop and load the same files, same disks, etc and see if that works. Maybe I can isolate it to the minimac although everything else works fine on the minimac, including the audio and video files. Things that give problems with iTunes will play fine in Quicktime.

I'm having the same problem with my MBP 17". I'm running OSX 10.5.3 and iTunes 7.6.2. I have a large library (17394 songs) on the internal drive. Unfortunately, I can't remember when it started but it is pretty consistent. The music still plays, but the spinning beachball pops up a lot, spins for about 5 to 10 seconds and stops. I can't do anything until it stops. I've repaired permissions and removed everything but Last.fm, which I use to add my recently played list to my blog.
Very annoying.

Same problem here. I'm running the latest versions of all software and I started having the same problem starting a few weeks ago. My 17" MBP stalls iTunes for 3-4 seconds on both music and videos whenever the track changes or when I'm working in iTunes and listening to music simultaneously. It's very, VERY annoying. I've tried reinstalling iTunes and remaking my library, but still get the same issue every time.
Oh, and on my P4 Power Mac at work, it locks up even more often and for MUCH longer, almost rendering iTunes useless for minutes at a time. Needless to say, this is super annoying!
Hopefully we'll have a new version of iTunes once the iPhone Apps Store is released, so please please PLEASE fix this issue! Thanks apple!

This problem began for me after I had installed some video files I got from a friend. These were .avi movies, which I converted to AppleTV format with VisualHub. I added them to iTunes and shortly afterwards, iTunes went nuts. I have tried removing all the video files and that does not help. I am thinking that iTunes has a virus or something. Everything else on my Mac works fine. And the files that give problems with iTunes will play without a glitch with Quicktime. In fact, I don't even try to play video with iTunes anymore. I just use QT, which is a pain in the butt.

What happens if you create a new account and used it to access iTunes? Try that. Maybe an administrator account will do. If you want to use another account, by al means.
