Accessing iDisk files from Windows Mobile Phone?

While I have been an .Mac user for years, I never really have done much regarding saving common or shared files "in the cloud". Recently though, my needs have changed and I figured I would start making use of the iDisk storage I am already paying for. On a related side note, I have been playing with the DropBox beta and it works pretty well on Macs and PCs for those who don't already have access to an online storage solution.
The one area I haven't quite figured out yet is how I can access iDisk from my AT&T Tilt Windows Mobile phone. Browser access didn't work - I tried Opera 8.5 and IE. The former gave me an unsupported browser message and the latter loaded a blank page (seemingly related to iDisk web interface plug-in requirements that pocket IE doesn't have). I haven't tried Skyfire with it yet, but I don't feel 100% comfortable passing access credentials through it as Skyfire uses servers on the other end to render pages so that they are viewable in their original forms (including embedded videos, etc) on the mobile platform.
So, unless I have missed something obvious, it would seem that I need a WM app to facilitate easy access to iDisk. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

After some additional investigation, it looks like there may not be a good solution for this. Since .Mac doesn't support FTP, most common solutions on the WinMo platform won't work. What I need is a WinMo client that supports WebDav and that I can not find. I found one for Palm called WiFile that supports WebDav, but they don't offer a WinMo equivalent.
I don't know if the revamped MobileMe interface will allow for access via Pocket IE, but my guess is that it won't (I think it might actually mover further away from Pocket IE compatibility than closer given the screenshots and videos I've seen of the new interface). Opera Mobile 9.5 public beta will be released in 2 weeks, but since the browser requirements for MobileMe appear even more limited than .Mac, I doubt Opera's new version will be any more helpful than what I have now with 8.5.
If anyone knows of a WinMo WebDav client, please chime in. Thanks.

Ok, 2 quick things. First, just to correct the above, I am using Opera Mobile 8.65 vs 8.5. Second, it appears that beta users of Opera Mobile 9.5 have found an easy way to enable user agent spoofing within the configuration settings. See the 7th post in this thread:
http://msmobiles.com/f/viewtopic.php?p=34802
I wonder if setting it to Firefox would enable proper access to the .mac/MobileMe web ui...

Well, the number of views for this topic would seem to indicate at least decent interest by users in the ability to do what I am trying to. I reached out to the owners of jkOnTheRun to see if they had any suggestions. Kevin Tofel responded and told me that he had also looked high and low for a WinMo WebDav client and had no success. I wonder if Apple's appeal to corporate users both with Exchange support on the iPhone and future desktop Exchange support in Snow Leopard, if someone will decide to create this kind of app.
In the interim, I plan on testing my idea about Opera 9.5 as soon as the public beta opens on July 15th. I'll report back here after I get a chance to test it. One possible solution could be to sync files/folders between my Tilt and the iDisk share. Windows Mobile Device Center is a little light on options for more complex file sync, but I have comes across solutions like Easy Sync that I could use to supplement. That's still not getting me my ultimate result, but it is something...

Well, after a bunch of trial and error, I got it to work. Let me say first that the solution is browser based, involves a pre-beta software release, required a user agent switch and may not work once the .Mac interface switches over to MobileMe. But for now, it does indeed work.
Let's first look at a couple of paths that didn't work:
- I have an iPhone, so I figured I would play around with it and iDisk. Mobile Safari on the IPhone works to properly display the web interface, but that doesn't do you much good. The lack of file structure access on the iPhone must be the limiting factor. I couldn't view files in my iDisk that the iPhone has viewers for (.doc, .pdf, etc). As many of you know, iDisk doesn't have web previews of the files even on desktop browsers, just the ability to download the files in the share. So, without the ability to download and then open on the iPhone, tapping on the download button next to a file in the share didn't do anything. Of course, while I could bring up the upload dialog box in iDisk, with no file structure access, I couldn't browse to any files to upload. So the whole thing is a tease.
- I tried Netfront Mobile 3.5 in advance of the Opera public beta release. It has pretty extensive User agent Spoofing, but regardless of what I tried, the page would just come up blank like in Pocket IE. I think the problem must be related to some kind of javascript incompatibility.
Here's the part where I almost had success:
I thought for a minute about Opera and realized that I remembered seeing blog postings about people having extracted 9.5 from the HTC Touch. With that in mind, I headed over to the XDA Developers forum and there it was - and more than one version to boot. The thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401643
The later build is the one I tried first - 1409. You can easily switch the user agent in Opera Mobile 9.5 (this does not apply to Mobile 8.65 - you need to hex edit the exe file to user agent switch) by entering about:config in the address bar of 9.5 and then scrolling down to the User Agent section. Opera has predefined user agent strings that you change just by changing the numerical value of that field. Those values are:
1 - Opera Mobile 9.5
2 - Firefox
3 - IE 6
The default (1) didn't work when I tried it on iDisk. IE 6 is obviously out since the .Mac/MobileMe requirements call for IE 7. When I switched to Firefox, presto!!! The page loaded properly just as it would on the desktop browser. There was only one problem - I couldn't click on the directory items with the stylus. The buttons above the directory listing (iDisk Home, Upload, New Folder, etc) worked, but I couldn't select the directory items themselves. This may have something to do with the way you navigate throughout a page on Opera 9.5. I say this because one of the quick access changes you can make via right-click is to turn text select on/off. So I am thinking that there may be some issue with selecting certain kinds of js elements with the stylus in certain navigation modes. Of course, that could just be a beta issue. I did try looking through the settings, but I didn't see anything that I thought applied - changing text select mode didn't work either. Using the hardware keys to try and navigate to the directory also didn't work.
So again, I figure I'm stuck even though i had come so far. I decide to I play around with 9.5 just to see how it performs generally as a browser and I noticed something odd. The hardware keyboard on my Tilt wasn't working properly. The onscreen keyboard kept popping up as I was trying to enter text from the hardware keys. The browser also would jump out of text entry altogether as I was typing. Using only the onscreen keyboard worked fine, though. It was very odd. When I went back to the XDA forums to see if anyone else had seen this, I saw that I wasn't the only one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2376502#post2376502
AND NOW FOR THE WORKING SOLUTION:
As per the recommendation, I uninstalled build 1409 and installed 1184 instead. I changed the user agent and voila!!! I still couldn't use the stylus to tap on those directory items, but I could navigate to them and select them with the hardware keys. I tested opening sub directories and downloading files. I tested opening a word document and a pdf with no problem. It appears as though there is at least one solution for iDisk access from WM.
I'll hang onto the cab of this 1184 build even after the 9.5 public beta drops just in case there are keyboard issues with the Tilt on the official beta. The real question is what happens when the .Mac interface changes over to MobileMe. I hope new js incompatibilities do not arise with the overhauled web interface, so I am crossing my fingers. I'll test that later in the week.
A WebDav client would still be preferable, but as long as this works, I'll take it.

Under opera:config User Perfs|Custom User-Agent you can specify whatever agent you would like.
The iPhone's User Agent string is: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543a Safari/419.3
OR
Surf to http://www.zytrax.com/tech/web/mobile_ids.html and pick one that better suits your needs.
I hope that helps.

Iphone cannot access site- can we modify user agent?

Hi,
No matter what I try to do, my Iphone cannot access applicationmanager.gov. The website refuses access under Safari, and that is the only browser I can use for the Iphone. Is there a way to install an alternative browser, or to modify my Iphone's user agent string in order to imitate Firefox, Opera, or IE, for the purposes of accessing this site? Thank you for your efforts.
