10.5.4 disabled all video output on my Macbook Pro
Posted: Jul 3, 2008 11:09 AM

I've just upgraded three Macbook Pros to 10.5.4. The first two went fine. On the third (my main work machine) it reboots but there's no display. Fortunately I can screen share with it. It's set its screen resolution to 1280 x 1024 (presumably the default if it finds no display).

In System Profiler "Color LCD" doesn't show up at all - it doesn't know it has a screen. Has anyone else had this problem?

Try resetting the SMC

It seems strange that an update causes a problem like this.

Hmm, no, that didn't fix it.

I guess this is related:

$ grep display: /var/log/system.log
Jul 3 19:30:29 localhost kernel[0]: display: family specific matching fails
Jul 3 19:30:29 localhost kernel[0]: display: family specific matching fails
Jul 3 19:30:29 localhost kernel[0]: display: family specific matching fails
Jul 3 19:30:45 voodoo kernel[0]: display: Not usable

On another MBP where the display is working normal I get no matches when I grep system.log for 'display:'

Also this in /var/log/windowserver.log:

Jul 03 19:30:45 94 kCGErrorFailure: MappedDisplay Driver: can't open any framebuffer
Jul 03 19:30:45 94 kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint at CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are returned
Jul 03 19:30:45 94 kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisplayDriverInitialize: No Display drivers loaded

I don't understand xnu startup well enough to know where to look for better diagnostics. I guess I should just swap the hard drive with one of the other MBPs to find out whether it's a software or hardware problem - although obviously it was working right before the upgrade to 10.5.4 so that kind of suggests the upgrade is to blame.

Actually, thinking about it it must be a hardware problem because I get no display from the firmware even before it's attempted to boot. It's been up for about a week since I last rebooted it. I guess in that time it's developed a hardware fault that only manifests at boot time. I just tried booting it from DVD and, as far as I can tell, it boots but again - no display.

At least the contents of the drive is intact so I don't have to restore from backup - I can just put the drive in another machine.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway :)

I've swapped the drive to another machine and it works fine - so I think the display hardware on that machine just chose an inconvenient moment to die. I imagine that the fact that I was doing the 10.5.4 update at the time was merely an unfortunate coincidence.

Thanks :)

Okay, I don't think it was an unfortunate coincidence. I have another post, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1583798&tstart=0 where I said that my machine wouldn't boot past a dark screen. Well when I read your post, I booted the machine again, and sure enough, I was able to see it on one of my other computers. I was able to login, and the machine is fine. The video is just dead, you can't even hook up an external monitor too it. I'm on the phone with Apple right now, letting them know, that this is not a coincidence, and I'll give further details as I get them.

Ah, that's interesting Kelly. Thanks for letting me know. I'll wait until I hear what they tell you before I send mine back then :)

Option-Click the Mac apple logo, top left and select System Profiler
Select Diagnostics and see if the Result: says Passed

I don't have the machine powered up right now - but I think the kernel messages I posted suggest that the diagnostics won't pass.

And if the diagnostics did pass that's suggest that they weren't very good diagnostics ;)

I did the diagnostics on mine, and this is what it says:

Power On Self-Test:

Last Run: 7/3/08 4:09 PM
Result: Passed

I have an appointment with the Genius Bar tonight at 8:00, I'll let you know what they say.

Just got back from the Apple Store, they confirmed that it was a hardware issue and they're ordering parts. But when I came home and turned on the computer, it would not start up again. I cannot see it over the network like I could earlier before I took it in. So it seems like an intermittent issue of not being able to start-up along with the dead video.

Hopefully this will all get cleared up when they replace whatever parts they're replacing. I waited for awhile at the store while they did everything, I didn't realize until I got home, that I didn't ask exactly what parts they're ordering... doh... Probably a new motherboard, as I think the video portion is part of it. Well I'm tired of this whole thing, and now I'm back to a computer that won't start...
