Can itunes library file be shared or copied between two macs?
Posted: Jul 10, 2008 9:50 AM

I have two macs that use the same networked hard drive for iTunes file storage. One is acting as a server front-end as it syncs with my AppleTV. The other I use on a daily basis, syncs with my iPhone and roams around the house. Ultimately I'd like to have both computers with iTunes show the same videos, music, ratings, play count, and other material. That way, if I download some music on the Macbook roaming laptop, it will sync with the Server computer and recognize when a file has been changed.

If I use automator to copy the latest itunes library file to both computers, will this doe the trick?

Any suggestions?

When I use an ext HD for my iTunes I place all the files on the ext HD. This way whenever you open iTunes for that drive the Library and .xml files for that library are available and on the same drive.

So what you are saying that that you are storing the itunes library and xml files in the same spot with the actual files? I know how you get iTunes to save files to a particular spot, but how do you get it to find the itunes library and .xml file when it is not on the main drive? (Forgive me, as I am not on my mac now.)

Solved

Yes - store the files on the same drive as the tune files - nest them in the same order as if they were on your computer.

I usually rename the Library file to reflect the tunes - ie: I have a HD that has a iTunes library file named 'Really Big Music'. I do this so I don't accidentally delete the wrong library file. When opening iTunes -open with the 'option' key held down and the follow the dialog box and select the library that you want to open.

I know this should go in a different forum, but if I move my photos to the same shared drive, then use 0ption+open to iPhoto, is suspect I can do the same shared setup?

Your suggestion did the trick! However, I ran into other issues as I realized that I need iTunes running all the time on my server-computer, and so my other computer that i use would not be able to update the file as it is in use. I'm considering separating the two computers in storage, then syncing the two with MyTuneSync.
