i managed to sign up for the 60 day free trial.
i entered by card details on the understanding that nothing would be charged until 60 days has passed.
i have just checked my card account online and apple have put a £121 pending transaction on the card! that's not even 1 years subscription.
what's that all about ?

Almost same here! I was charged for 100 EUR. MobileMe in our region costs only 79 EUR. It's usual when they charge 1 US dollar, not strange sums bigger that their pricing.

I've no idea - this is a user-to-user Forum, you aren't talking to anyone from Apple here.
The best place to go would be:
http://www.apple.com/support/dotmac/account/
and use the email link at the bottom of the page.

You are not the only one. But take a bit closer look on your credit card statement. On mine it says "reserved", still not charged yet. But why they pre-authorize a lot more than the actually subscription fee, I do not know.
When I look more carefully, it seems they have pre-authorized the same amount needed for the .me family pack.
Going to phone my credit card company in the morning when regular business hours open here in Norway and double check with them. Hopefully the money will be back on my account in a couple of days.

I don't mean to be funny, but I'd want to make sure a site was up and running and totally stable before entering my card details into it, even an Apple one.

I didn't actually know there was problems with mobileme. I only read it was going to be released on the 10th or something.
And when I was home during my lunch break, I browsed by the site, and it was up, so I registered for a trial account to see if I could get the mail address I wanted, which I did _.
About the pre-authorize I kinda saw that one coming, but was stumped over the amount tho.

Just curious. Are you using a debit card or an actual credit card?

i went to the site and it allowed me to do it. how was i supposed to know that it wasn't "up and running" or not "stable". if it wasn't then it shoulnd't have let me sign up for the trial.
do you check every online store/website for stability before doing anything on it?

another account that was created before mobileme transition works fine.
