It does backup every time, unless you uncheck the box that says do not sync when connected. the first time, mine took a long time, but now, it takes less than a minute to sync.

If you have purchased apps on the appstore with the iPhone, then it will take longer to back up. Or you have added some stuff to your iPhone since the last back up.

My backup is painfully slow too. If I just add one song or photo why do all the applications have to be backed up again!? There needs to be a way to sync (just add or delete what has changed) without backing up everything!

something like "backup weekly" would be nice.

Just tried again and apparently the secret is to hit "apply" when you change something, not "sync".

Solution is to hit the small "x" cancel button on the right of the progress bar. See this thread:

That is good to stop an unnecessary backup but if you're actually trying to sync data to the iPhone you might not want to do that.

I think I must have downloaded an App too far as my nice and quick backup is now taking around 15 minutes!

There's something definitely a bit odd about this "backup" process. I noticed the same thing happening with my first gen iPhone following the upgrade to the 2.0 firmware and iTunes 7.7. I've noticed these backups each and every sync, and even if I downloaded a single app on the phone, it shouldn't take 15mins (or more) to backup that one program. It's almost like it's doing a full backup of the phone each time anything has changed.

I don't sync my phone a lot, but this is certainly annoying. Hopefully they'll sort it out w/ iTunes 7.7.1.

Same problem here, backup is annoying! I could copy gigs of files over USB in the time it takes for iTunes to back up such a minor change I don't even remember making it.
Lets hope a fix or a checkbox option is in the works soon.

Same problem here -- 10-20 minute backup every time I sync :( Does apple already check these boards or is there a more proper place we can report the issues?
