Exchange for the rest of us? Were we conned?
Posted: Jul 12, 2008 9:17 AM

I'm running MobileMe 1.1 on both my MacBook Pro (10.5.4) and my Mac Pro (10.5.4) and this Push contact stuff is working nothing like how my Exchange account works with my work server. If I make a change on the MobileMe web contacts, my Macs will update pretty quickly, but if I make a change to my contacts on my Mac, nothing happens until I manually initiate a sync even though I have MobileMe sync set to "Automatic" in my System Preferences. In my experience with my work Exchange account using Entourage, everything is instantaneous with no effort on my part. I was under the impression the way everything was explained in the Keynote, was that all the data was going to be stored server side like an Exchange server. Am I off my rocker with this? or does anyone else feel the same way?

I'm with you on this one. Experiencing the same thing. I thought this was going to be better than .Mac but it's just the same stuff with a new name. I understand that the sync between "the cloud" and the iPhone is pretty quick (I've seen it myself) but what's the use if data manipulated on the Mac is not also as fast? That's totally lame and the same thing I hated about .Mac. This needs to change to work like exchange if this service is to be taken serious.

Yeah, I never really liked .Mac for syncing, never thought it worked well at all, and it seems to me, the way its structured right now, its the same thing for Mac to Mac syncing, nothing different... and certainly not Exchange-like.

All,

MobileMe is having some teething problems. According to the demos, any change in any device (Web, iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac) automatically gets pushed to the cloud and the cloud pushes to the rest of the other registered devices.

I would give this a few more days before they sort this out. It is very disappointing that they have had such a massive failure on delivering on their promises but I am confident that Apple will work through these problems and we should all be in a good shape in a few days.

I hope you're right and these are just opening-night jitters. Pretty much the only reason I signed up for MobileMe was to be able to "push" calendar and contact changes between my four Macs and two iPhones. The keynote and the video seemed to show things happening in all direction instantaneously, which is what I paid for.

I suspect that Apple may have a lot of very dissatisfied customers on their hands if "Exchange for the rest of us" turns out to be old sync in a new skin.

I don't know if Apple monitors these lists, but some sort of clarifying statement from them would be really helpful. To see MobileMe's status listed as green when there are these issues and questions is not really very reassuring. If this really is how MM is supposed to work, I want my money back.

The whole thing is just a mess. It's not very intuitive and its not outlined well in any documentation. For all the people who say "it's teething issues"... you expect that from Beta software, not release software, and certainly not from Apple.

From everything I see, that MobileMe updater was nothing more than icon and textual updates to change everything from ".Mac" to "MobileMe". The components that are supposed to be push activated should not be in the MobileMe sync list if they are part of the push data features. What happens if I don't want my Keychains and other services synced automatically but on a manual basis? One setting for all of the services doesn't make much sense. The way everything was explained, I was expecting everything that was part of the push features to be out of that list and only the things that were left, like Keychains, Mail Signatures, etc would then be left in the list and then you can choose what to do with the remaining services as far as frequency of syncs, etc.

MobileMe is here and I still have to sit and wait for that sync icon to start spinning, lame.

OK, so I did a full restore in an effort to get my OG iPhone to behave sensibly. In the process of configuring it, I was asked if I wanted to enable it for "push" interactions with MobileMe. When I clicked on "Enable", I was sent to this Web site:

http://www.apple.com/mobileme/setup/?referer=INFO&lang=en&deviceClass=iPhone&familyID=10000&softwareVersion=2.0;os=Mac&osVersion=10.4.11;iTunesVersion=7.7

...which I had never, ever, seen or heard of before. I followed the instructions for setting up an iPhone and now, in the "Info" pane for the iPhone in iTunes it says, "Your contacts are being pushed to your iPhone over the air from MobileMe."

Have I tested it yet? Of course not-with everything going on around here (e.g., all of my contacts disappearing from the phone overnight, and my iPhone still vanishing from iTunes at seemingly random intervals) I'm terrified to. (->) But, I thought I'd report encountering this "enabling" interaction, of which I had not previously heard.

I think that we got totally ripped off with MobileMe!!! It, no offense, pretty much *****! Getting rid of all of those features, like iCards, web bookmark access, member central!!! I mean come on Apple!!! If they are reading this, then I would rather have .mac back!!! I want .mac again!!!

Well Suraj K. Rai

If you read how to set it up the PUSH is only to your phone and MobileMe. You have to set your computer up to Auto Sync, which is not really Pushing. The computer is relying on MM and or it's apps to tell the system when to Auto Sync.

I think the point is that currently Auto Sync set to Automatic is not working. I still have to press 'sync now' to get updates to iCal, Contacts etc synced.

If it was working - I would be perfectly happy.

I have been testing contacts syncing and it is working perfectly between my iPod Touch, "the cloud", and my MacPro. I have deleted a few contacts on my iPod Touch and the change is being propagated perfectly in the cloud and my MacPro.

You might want to take a look at the "dotmacsync.log" file under the ~/Library/Logs/Sync/ folder in Console.app to see it in action.

You should able to something like the following as the change gets sent to your Mac:

I have contacted the MobileMe Support and I am waiting for their answer regarding this issue. I think that Push works only in these directions:
  • MobileMe ->iPhone/Touch
  • MobileMe ->Mac/PC
  • iPhone/Touch -> MobileMe

When you make a change on a Mac, it gets synced just like before...I am waiting for Apple's answer in this...

It's my Mac to 'the cloud' that I'm having problems with.

Changing a contact on my Mac doesn't get updated to 'the cloud' unless I press 'sync now'. It should be automatic when sync preferences is set to automatic.

Here is how I understand / understood this, and the way it SEEMS to be working...

MobileMe pushes both directions - but between mobile service and the iPhone (or touch) - the system apps are still dependant on them sending MM information via the sync feature.

In other words if you make a change on the web apps (MM) or on the phone, sure thing, it DOES get pushed as advertised BOTH WAYS and immediately (working well in fact). If you have your sync settings on Auto, it should also be 'fairly immediate' for the apps on your system (both ways) - but it's not immediate as they rely on the sync service. They don't push themselves.
