iPhone 3G stuck at the Apple logo screen; will not boot!

My iPhone 3G has been working all day. I rebooted it because it was hanging when trying to use some apps, and now it's hung at the Apple logo. It will not boot fully. I have tried to reboot the phone many times but I get the same problem. I let it sit there for 30 minutes and it does nothing.
Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it without doing a Restore?

Sounds like you've done all you can. You're going to have to put it into recovery mode and do a restore.

mine did this to try this.
press and hold the power/home button till the screen gose black.(before the apple logo appers)
then plug iphone into comp and hold home button down,
itunes will see the iphone as a new phone.

This happened to me too. I was syncing with iTunes and then it just crashed and tried to reboot. It got stuck on the apple logo. Luckily I was patient enough to wait through the hour long backup it required last night. I think 2.0 is very unstable. If this happens again I think I will go back to my old 1.1.4 1st gen iphone.

Sadly this happened to me. I let it sit for a few min then plugged it into my comp and let it sit agian, it finally booted up. Took about 10 min. All was fine after that. It happened when i was installing a program and it locked up. Fun times. We need firmware 2.1!

This has happened to me 4 times now.
I've basically resorted to not using any 3rd party apps until the 2.1 software.
This is a joke. What a buggy release.
Maybe they should have waited until December. Sheesh.
Total buzzkill.

I agree, this is really bad. I had a jailbroken phone for 9 months and never once got stuck like this, even with some serious hacking. I have both a 2G and a 3G phone on firmware 2.0 and neither has made it more than a few days without needing to be restored. Apple seriously needs to fix this! I'd recommend staying away from 2.0 until there's a firmware update.

Not sure if anyone has identified any apps that might be causing issues, but I've stayed away from the NY Times app and it's been smooth sailing and no restoring needed since then.
Just a thought.
Anyone else find some potential trouble-maker apps?

I can confirm the exact same behavior and it appears to be after one of the following apps were installed on my iPhone. By the way, I have duplicated with both the 3G and my original iPhone.
Facebook
Mobile News Network
Mocha VNC Lite
Morocco
NYTimes
These are the only new applications that I have either installed or updated since I have last restarted my iPhone.
The behavior immediately manifests upon restore as soon as my profile is restored to my iPhone and it syncs everything over.
I will try to track this down to a single app.

When you remove these two apps, boot time goes from 9m42s to 44s.
When Mocha VNC Lite is installed, it increases boot time to 2m18s.
When NY Times is installed, it increases boot time to 6m38s.

I am now restoring iPhone for the 4th time in 24 hours. It is definitely App related. I added Loopt and Personal Asst. to my apps list and thought these might be the culprit. But on the last restore I chose to not include these apps in the sync. But that did not work. Phone went to Apple Logo... which only solution is to put it into the recovery mode.
Thankfully, I have all my contacts, calendars, notes stored in the MobileMe cloud and it makes this process go quicker.
If this next restore from backup does not work, I am going to try "Set up as new iPhone".
I spoke with Apple Tech support yesterday... was on the phone with them for 2 hours before they disconnected. So, Apple does not know this issue exists.

Oh, they know! I've had all of the above issues, tried every and all remedies several times, even uninstalled and reinstalled itunes. My phone froze up totally for over 24 hours after several attempts to sync and itunes closed then I had to reset, not even an apple logo, just a dim lit screen. Went to the genius bar, they replaced my phone. The tech said apple knows and is working on it.
Note: tried to book an appointment online, none available so I went and signed the standby list.
Luckily someone didn't show up, because they said some people wait for hours.
The new one is doing the same thing. I have yet to sync fully. my contacts & calendar sync OK, a few apps, beyond that nothing-no music, photos, podcasts, ringtones. Itunes hangs during syncing an application and iphone times out. the only option is to close itunes and reset the phone. Upon fully reset, maybe 1 or 2 apps are installed, nothing else. Resetting takes forever, it has frozen again with the apple logo for about 12 hours, and usually about 10-30 min each reset. I have restored the new one twice. Problem is, when it freezes up or times out, itunes won't recognize the iphone at all, it says no iphone detected.
I am now going to restore the phone again, and not attempt to install any apps until this issue is resolved. I have already spent hours on this, and really tried everything. I would rather have my music, ringtones, photos, podcasts etc than a few apps. Shame, because i've spend at least $50 in addition to numerous free apps.
Side note: I scheduled another appointment at the genius bar when my phone was out of commission for 12 hours, they are booked for three days in advance so the issue is still widespread. Luckily I was able to finally get itunes to recognize my phone and restore.
