New apps crash iPhone 2.0 software on launch
Posted: Jul 13, 2008 7:59 PM

I installed the 2.0 firmware on my Edge iPhone on Friday. I have noticed that every once in a while, the Phone will re-boot itself when I click on one of the new application icons. It immediately shows the while Apple logo and is re-booting.

It has happened with more than one application, so I don't know if the applications are coded wrong or the 2.0 firmware has bugs. After the phone re-boots, I can click the same application icon and it will work fine.

I've had the phone hang and eventually reboot numerous times now. At least 3 of the times, the iPhone started up to the Apple logo and just sat there, forcing me to do a restore of my backup just so I can get back into the thing.

All three times I had just finished installing an app via the app store on the phone. The first two were WeatherBug, and the last was just now with ypmobile. One of the times I had just finished installing WeatherBug, gone into "Settings", had it beachball there for awhile, and then reboot and not come back.

All in all, when the phone is working for me, it works fantastic. When it's failing, it failing disastrously. I don't know how Apple managed to do such a successful, seamless hardware transition from PowerPC to Intel, yet can't manage to do something as simple as release a working upgrade to an existing product. I can understand the apps having problems, being initial releases, but there should be some sort of protection in the phone's OS to ensure it doesn't bring down the entire system with it.

It's the apps. Some seem to require a reboot when first run (would be nice if they warned you), in other cases it's just crash. Can happen with any OS/app - probably more likely in this case given the tight timelines for app development.

This seems to happen to me fairly regularly with the PhoneSaber application. Like you, after the phone resets I am always able to launch the application normally.

I've observed the same behavior on both my old iPhone and the new iPhone 3G. I try to launch an app (experienced this on a variety of apps) and I immediately get the boot splash screen. I do a hard reset and the screen goes black followed by powering on and the splash screen appears again. The funny thing is that it doesn't seem to be actually powering off. A few cycles of hard resets later and just when you think you're screwed, it just seems to magically fix itself and the home icons appear and you're back up and running. It is almost as if it is rebooting but not updating the screen. I keep trying different things to figure out the magic formula so I'm waiting for the next lock-up to try something new.

I am not having problems with the phone crashing (rebooting or restarting). However, every time I tap an application, it appears to start but will shut down after a couple of seconds and return to the home screen. It does not seem to be a memory problem, since I've restarted the phone to clear any memory in the cache. All the non-app phone features work well. Occasionally they work, but it is not clear when and why this happens.

Any ideas?

same exact problem for me. tried power cycle, reboot, full restore blowing away everything... all to no avail. bug thumbs down to the 2.0 software update.

apple needed to test this a lot more, they clearly didn't do enough.

I'm having the same problem. It looks like a bug.
It seems to me it has nothing to do with a specific application. It appears like the cache needs to be reseted in order to handle a new block of information. After opening 4 applications or more, the phone will reboot automatically before I can run other programs.

I am having the same problem, I try to open an App and it seems to not even be there, did you delete the app and re-sync it (re-adding it)?

I had this iPod for a Year and it NEVER Crashed Updated it to 2.0 CRASH.

The Guys at the Apple store said to Uninstall All the Apps from the Device and let iTunes replace them and it should be fine

I have the same problem. In the past week, my iphone (with 2.0 update) has crashed applications more than in the last 7 months since I bought it. Although a lot of the application I installed were free, I did pay for a couple of them and expect them to work...not blank out and send me back to home screen. I have deleted most of the free applications and reinstalled the pay ones, so will see if that works. Have never been as frustrated with iphone as i am now
