Text message alert sounds disappear (3G)
Posted: Jul 14, 2008 1:52 PM

I dunno if anyone else is having the same problem, but..

I got the iPhone 3G over the weekend, and I've noticed that my text-message alert sounds kind of go away. The phone will vibrate, but the alerts don't sound off.

Before you say anything, Yes the phone is on Loud (it's not on Vibrate), Yes my text message alerts are enabled in settings, Yes I've double checked.

So far the only way I've been able to fix this is to restart the phone.. which can get really annoying when you do it over and over.

I THINK that it's caused by the headphones.. I've noticed that the text alerts work, but when I plug in the headphones and then unplug them the sounds stop working.

So, has anyone else had this problem?? If so, does anyone know how to fix it? Or what I can do?

Plugging in the headphones and unplugging them a few times has solved the problem for a few people, but I am having this problem at the moment and the headphone trick has not had any effect.

Same, as of now the headphone trick isn't doing it for me either..

I used to have to do that with my old iPhone when all sound whatsoever would cease because the phone thought the headphones were still in.

I guess I should reiterate, that ALL other sounds still work. The ringer works, the button clicks, the lock / unlock sounds..

The only thing that stops working is the text message alerts.

This is exactly the problem I'm having and it's been happening since I updated to 2.0.. possibly something apple did.

I came to the discussion boards for this very issue! I'm having the EXACT same problem with my 3G. Like you, I've checked to make sure all of the settings are where they should be, and they are. The phone only vibrates when I get a text message. Sometimes it doesn't even do that!

I have the same issue. This is obviously a bug in the new iPhone 2.0 firmware. Is anyone NOT having this issue?

That's the second time people have mentioned the 2.0 software.

Are you, or anyone, having this problem on the old iPhone?

I to just registered on this board for the same problem!

After a few text messages I need to manually check to see if I've gotten any as there is no longer an alert!

Once I turn the phone off and then back on, I start getting alert tones again that at new text was received.

Apple needs to see this thread!

Ditto to everything rdurbin said. Brand new iPhone 3G. Thought I was going crazy and not hearing the alert. The on/off trick does it for me temporarily as well.

Not having a good iPhone 3G start of the week. First this and then can't get Outlook at work to sync with mobileme. And no bars inside my place of work!

Sadly, I'll concede that old verizon had better reception. sigh.

I am having the same issue. Very annoying considering I am a huge texter and have to check manually...errrr. My OCD definitely kicking in here. lol. I did notice it must have started to occur after I plugged in the headphones for the first time last night. On another note, does anyone else find the headphones really hurt? I have another pair of regular headphones from panasonic I purchased for my iPod but these have the microphone and button to answer a call, so I guess I won't be using the headphones at all! Especially since they somehow de-activate text alerts!

I've never plugged the head phones in. So I doubt that's the reason for this. Turning it off and back on shouldn't fix it if that was the case either.

I've "updated" to firmware 5A347 and have yet to re-encounter the issue. Hopefully this has solved it. I'm at work and don't have my headphones on me to rule that those out.

In case any of you are not aware, brand new iPhone 3Gs (like mine) came with firmware ver. 5A345. You have to perform a Restore in iTunes to force the update.

This takes a long time - 45 mins for me. I had lots of apps installed. It will backup your unit prior to a Restore but it doesn't put music, videos, or synched photos back. Everything else gets restored. That includes custom screen layouts, all General settings, and app settings.

And supposedly it diminishes the yellow screen tinge. It does seem "whiter" to me, as if they bumped up the blue. But the original yellow cast didn't bother me either.
