Good question.

There is this http://www.isode.com/whitepapers/imap-idle.html that describes the imap idle method, but the iPhone syncs other things as well doesn't it (address book and cal)?

Maybe its doing something funky with Wide Area Bonjour ?

Robin,

I think I should point out (as a £G iPhone owner and as the VP Marketing of the company that wrote the whitepaper you pointed to) that the iPhone's email client does not support IMAP-IDLE. Very disappointing given Steve Job's initial assertion during his speech introducing the original iPhone that for email "IMAP is, of course, the best".

'Push-IMAP' isn't an Open Standard, so I'd avoid it. I'm not sure the iPhone supports Push-IMAP either (there where some rumours after the initial phone announcements that it would with Yahoo! mail).
