Apple Launching App Store Beta Program?

This might just be AdHoc dist, but hopefully there is something coming down the pipe that's integrated into iTunes. Might be a nice way to help apple figure out who to promote to the regular store, based on feedback.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/342979210/

"Now we’re hearing from an app developer that Apple is finally going to start rolling out a new beta program in the next few days. Details are slim, but it seems like Apple is capping the total number of beta participants at 100 per app. In order to download a beta app, users will need to submit their iPhone’s serial number to the developer, who will then need to flag its eligibility in the store itself. All betas will still be distributed through the App Store - you won’t be able to download one on an external site.

It sounds like developers that haven’t had their apps approved yet will still be able to participate in the beta program. This should alleviate some of the developers’ anxiety (at least they’ll know their app will work once it goes live), but it still doesn’t address the the delays and lack of communication that many developers are complaining about."

Wonder if this is just adhoc dist, they're talking about, or something integrated into the AppStore.

Of course an obvious fly in the ointment is that developers get no information whatsoever from Apple as far as who has purchased the application. So we have no way to send out an email to users saying, e.g., "who wants to beta test the next version?" We do (at least, WE do) get some feedback from people about our apps, but we can only ASSUME that they really are actual users, since there's no way to verify that.

You could put an "email to register" link on your initial first-run splash screen, and get willing beta tester email addresses that way. Once you get the average ratio of actual purchasers to people who click on that link, you can use the frequency of email to that address to track sales on a statistical basis.

For myself, I don't want every developer, of every app I try, to have my email address or contact information. They already have my money (or a percentage).

Or just put a big button on your app screen "News". Or just make the lower half an embedded web page.

Seriously, folks..
