Airport Extreme not working after firmware upgrade
Posted: Jul 27, 2008 2:43 AM

Hi,

Yesterday our MacBook Pro said we had a firmware upgrade to download for our Airport Extreme. Downloaded and installed the upgrade. Airport Extreme hasn't worked since. Have tried all I know (not very much). I reset the Airport Extreme tried reinstalling the disk that came with it but we just keep getting a flashing amber light.

After the upgrade installed it asked us a few questions. It's quite possible that we gave the wrong answers because we weren't sure about some of them.

Any ideas?

I'd try to take the power down to the modem first then the router. Even to the point of disconnecting the ethernet. Then connect ethernet and power modem up first then the router.

Thanks for your reply Smokerz. I gave it a shot but still no joy.

The modem works fine when plugged directly into the computer if that helps at all.

I'm on your same situation. I have hard-reset the airport express 3 times to not avail. The light is green and yet I cannot connect to the internet (I have restarted the modem and the airport)

When I connected directly to the modem I was able to connect without a problem.

I too just updated the firmware and have not been able to get Airport Utility to find my Airport Extreme since the update. I seem to remember having a problem last year with a firmware upgrade and had followed someone's recommendation to revert to a previous firmware.

That is what I was hoping to do but I don't know how. Do you remember how you did it?

Had the same problem with my Airport Time Capsule (TC). I firmly believe it was the latest release of Apple firmware update to version 7.3.2 that caused this problem. Here's the fix:

1. Hard reset your Airport device (Express, Extreme or Time Capsule). http://With TC, hold the RESET button with a paper clip for more than 5 seconds until the L.E.D. blinks quickly.

2. Open Airport Utility to re-scan the manufacture default settings of your Apple wireless device while on the network. I suggest for now to do everything by Ethernet cable.

3. If you're lucky as I was, previous wireless attributes and Time Machine data were retained and can be used again. However, all IP settings such as DHCP etc need to be reconfigured. Don't forget any print server(s), reserved IPs based on MAC addresses, NATs, all of that needs to be reconfigured.

4. You should be up and running fairly quickly.

Spread the word to other forums of this problem and fix.

I tried that but still couldn't get access to the internet (I tried restarting the cable modem too). Anybody knows how to revert to a previous firmware version?

This is why I am still using 7.1.1.

Tried resetting again and then had to tell it to ignore an issue that was making the light flash amber (not sure if this was a good idea or not). Still didn't work straight away but then stumbled my way through the network preferences assistant and seem to be back on line.

I had tried both these things before but I must have done something different this time but I really don't know what. Sorry that doesn't really help the other people who are having problems.

I have a similar problem, but my airport extreme has a blinking yellow light and Airport Utility cannot find any of my wireless devices, including my airport express.

This is what I receive when I run the Airport utility and scan for Apple wireless devices:

"Airport Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices. Please make sure the Apple wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."

Well both are plugged in and they are in range. But I cant find airport extreme or my express. Please help. I should have never done the update I guess.

Thanks.

Hi Cyrus14, That was how my problem started too. Have you tried doing the hard reset as suggested by MyTechGuy above. I think after I did that the computer found it again.

Thanks for the suggestion. For some reason, when I first did that, it didn't work. But now everything is good to go.

I have similar problem. Everything works great when bypassing the Airport Extreme base station and connecting straight to computer. But when going thru the AEBS, I can not connect. The AEBS does show up in Airport Utility and indicates everything is connected, but it won't connect. I have rebooted more times than I can count and unplugged the AEBS but no go. What should I do? Any help is appreciated

My wireless network became much slower AFTER I upgraded my Time Capsule to firmware 7.3.2. The interesting thing is that only my 2 Mac's (10.5.4) got affected, my PC (Windows XP) was OK. I decided to downgrade back to 7.3.1 and the problem was solved! The procedure to downgrade is simple yet not very obvious. Here is a site that provides a step-by-step instructions.

Good luck!
