Netboot status light turns gray

I'm running OSX Server 10.5.4 and using Netboot. Soon after I have clients Netboot, the status light turns grey and it says "Netboot Service is Not available", and the startime and last client update are not available.
A dropdown window did appear with this message:
The service has encountered an error.
Try to refresh the view (Server1/Netboot)
Report the problem to the administrator if it persists.
(NIL_RESPONSE_ERR (*** -NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nill key]
I did try to refresh the view, but it did not help.
It is presisting and I'm the admin.
Any idea what is happening? Any suggestions?

You most likely have a bad NBImageInfo.plist file in one of your .nbi folders. If you have the property list editor installed, look through the NBImageInfo.plist files for one where the "Index" key is of type "String" instead of "Number" and change it.

Thanks for that tip. I did use a plist editor to look in both NBImageInfo.plist files that I found and the object "Index" in both files was of type "Number".
I'm more shocked that with a cryptic message like that the answer is to "report it to your administrator". Any suggestion on what to do next?

Old issue - been an issue evern since 10.4 came out. 10.3. was fine. Here is a link to an old thread:

The only way to get functionality back is by using the serveradmin command line for all netboot administration. You can reboot the server, but the problem will always come back.
Also, file a bug report on this at bugreport.apple.com

Unfortunately, no. The only thing that I know for sure causes that problem is the Index field.
