Dropped Calls and no G3 on ATT (is this a "Known issue"?)
Posted: Jul 30, 2008 7:38 PM

Hello All
I just purchased an iPhone and switched from Verizon to AT&T. Since I have switched, I have hardly had a chance to even use it. I make a call and it drops. I get a high pitched wining sound and it drops. I talked with AT&T tech support today and they said it was a "Known issue" that is being worked on for calls being dropped when switched on to the G3 network. I switched off and it is just as bad. I will have 5 bars in one place and without moving it goes to 0 bars and then drops the calls. AT&T said they would follow up and send someone out to also check the cell towers (uh huh). I live in the Napa Valley north of SF, CA. The tech support said my call coverage should be "Excellent" and not have issues. I got them to at least credit me for the Data charges of $30 since I cannot use and have to keep G3 turned off. Is anyone else experiencing this? is it the iPhone/software? I want to know really what is going on so I don't get caught up in a 2 year contract. I have less than 30 days to get this resolved or at least get some honest answers. Is this just really AT&T and bad service? I had verizon and I loved it. no issues...ever.
Anyone? I would love some input.

There is a problem and they are not saying what it is. I switched from Verizon as well. I went through three iphones before switching back to Verizon today.

This is a big issue for me.

As a Verizon customer for 6 years, who talks about 2,000 minutes per month on my phone, I don't know if I will be able to take it. (Planning on switching this weekend or Monday to the iPhone).

Last week, riding the C Train downtown, I got enough service to send/receive text messages at each stop WHILE RIDING THE TRAIN!! It was shocking, but useful since I was late and could update my friend with how close I was. I accept that nothing like this will ever happen with the iPhone.

I can take the slow speeds, but not the unreliable ability to make and receive calls.

Have no fear it works fine in NYC. My only complaints are as follows. At work in Times Square I can only pick up Edge during the day. Thats fine though bc Tmobile gets 0 service and Verizon is crappy at best in my building 33 stories up.

Sounds like something is amiss beyond ATT. Did you try restarting the phone? Hold down the top button and home buttons until it reboots. Did that work? Also you may want to back it up and run a full restore on it. If that still doesn't work your phone ***** (or service *****) get a replacement. If it still ***** take it back get a refund and wait till ATT improves their service in your area.

Hey, thanks for the responses, I have restarted many times, however I have not restored. Is will do this, but I have only had it for 3 days and have nothing on this phone except for a few contacts since I have not had time to sit down and do it yet.

I would sure like to keep this question/answer thing going and see if there are any others experiencing this.

I LOVE my iPhone and sure would like to stick with it. But ths is not a good thing.

Thanks Y'all

BTW, when on the phone with AT&T tech support today, she had me turn OFF my G3 and when I did, all bars disappeared and the call was dropped. It took over 2 minutes for the call to appear in my "Recent Calls" and "Voice Mail"
Finally she called back.
So that kind of says something, that the G3 could have something to do with it.
??
Hopefully it is a software issue.

I wish Apple/AT&T would just SAY something.

Known? Ha! Did you do a search before starting yet another thread on this?

There's a huge long running thread about this issue:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1632695&tstart=25

And that's just a continuation of the previous thread which grew so big that admin had to start a new one.

I just switched to att from verizon for the new iphone and I'm having problems with dropped calls. I live in center city philadelphia on the 35th floor and I'll have full bars and then zero and then the call drops (this always happen in my apt). This also happens with my wifes new phone the lg shine, her's is worst. I read somewhere that when the phone loses g3 and switches to edge there is a 20 sec delay and thats when the call is dropped. I haven't talk to att yet, but my friend with att haven't had any problems like this with their phones (which are not on g3). So I think is the g3 network not the phones

Truth of the matter is ATT was not ready for this. I was ready to turn in my 3G
and go back to my old iPhone when a tech rep at Apple told me to turn off
3G. I went from full bars at home to only one when 3G was on and all of my
calls were getting dropped. After the rep told me this I replied, "excuse me?
You mean the reason I bought the new iPhone, so I can talk and email at the
same time on the 3G network, is not even doable yet?" He replied that they've
been telling customers to turn off the 3G and then the phone would work fine -
which it did. Now I just keep it on the edge network and hope that one day the
3G network will be up to speed and I live in LA! So give it a shot and turn off 3G.

Thanks ATT!

Hey,
yes it has issues.
Mine also had those issues.
Call apple and they'll replace it.
They did for me anyway! =]
Give it a try! =]
