2.0.1 KILLED MY iPHONE 3G
Posted: Aug 4, 2008 7:50 PM

Plugged in the iPhone, clicked update, it downloaded the update, expanded it, then I got an Error message saying an unknown error occurred and that the iPhone could not be updated.

It now tells me I have an iPhone in recovery mode and it needs to be restored. It won't restore either, same error.

WHAT THE!?

Phone's a brick... Won't let me restore from older firmware, and I happen to be on the computer at work. Going to try restoring from a backup at home tonight.

I am TOTALLY distraught

I handed it over to one of our service technicians. He put it in what he called DSE mode, which he said he's not sure is the right term for it, and basically he said it puts the handset in to a forced restore mode, and plugged it in to his machine. Restore worked perfectly, and 2.0.1 is running fine now. No longer a brick.

I've been trying the force restore 3 times to no avail here.
Phone comes back up with the usb connector and itunes logo and stays there forever.
and Rogers seems a bit clueless :-(

do a hard-reset (hold the home and power button until it shuts off)
hold the home button when plugging it back to your laptop

make sure you have installed itunes 7.7.1 . I had the same problem! Install itunes 7.7.1 by opening itunes 7.7 and in the top left, click "HELP", then click "Check for updates"
