2.0.1 and the lag
Posted: Aug 5, 2008 2:17 PM

Well updated my iPhone this morning and all seemed well although I don't seemed to of been blessed by this better signal strength that most people seem to be reportin.
But I did notice that my lag was gone on SMS and then I go to send a text tonight and o what's that I have entered in two lines worth of text nearly and the phone is struggling along well behind and then just add insult to injury it started happening while typing this post and then saffri shuts down so I have to write this again

So after that rant any one else had the same issue or similar or just any other surprises with 2.0.1

Btw I am a 3g 16gb iPhone user on o2
Just incase anyone might have a solution that might help

the infamous keyboard and contact lag has gone for few hours only and it comes back again. Not just me, but few my fri3nds with appl3g r3porting the same issue again. To me, it has nothing improved. The dslreports speed test get better numbers but the browser speed aint improve so, it might just numb3rs.

what does it fix? apple has not announced the list of bug fix yet, and are waiting to see which fix is actually working first. The real list might content more bugs then reports, they are not opening a new can of worms.

I agree 100%. This is the same story all over again. It always works great after a reboot or restore for like an hour or 2 then right back to laggy contacts and texting. And for someone who needs to text as much as I do for work, it's really getting on my last nerve. How are first gen iphones that dont have 2.0 or 2.0.1 running at faster speeds? And then apple has the nerve to tell me they haven't had any other reports of this problem when I called them. Maybe they should read all these posts.

Same with me in SMS ; It has happened only once so far but yes, the keyboard lag is surely there. Is it due the very long sms conversation? but then apple doesn't give me the flexibility to delete few messages. it's either no delete or full conversation delete

There was no indication in the release notes that any 'lag' issues were fixed. OR anything that we've been complaining about.

For anyone who follows Apple's release notes when they say 'Bug Fixes.' they generally apply to security updates. You and me may have to wait until a later release to see other things fixed.

Ditto - phone still lags like CRAZY. I am finding it more and more difficult to write e-mail/ SMS due to the lag. I removed all of the 3rd party apps to try and find if there was something else causing the issue.

Ugh... useless...

I didn't want to speak too soon but...

I went ahead and installed the 2.0.1 update based on the reports of the lag being gone (I was still on 1.1.4) and it seemed fine, for a while. Then I opened my contacts this afternoon to make a phone call and it hung there for a couple of seconds unresponsive as before. I clicked on a name and it hung again before finally showing me the phone number. This is NOT cool, 1.1.4 was fine, I know, I was using it yesterday!
I exchanged my iPhone for this one a few weeks ago because the 2.0 update made my phone unusable for daily use. I hope I don't have to exchange this one too.

I'm also not to impressed with the battery life. I am really hard pressed to get 6 hours "use" out of this thing, usually it's around 4-5 hours "use" before the warning comes on, and this is mostly talk time. I thought it was supposed to get much better than this...like almost twice the usage time!

Yeah, correct. Its like we are the unpaid beta testers. To make matters more bad, quite a number of my family and friends are having a nice time; They didn't hurry up and buy the phone; we ran around all the places to grab the phone in few couple of day of launch, things don't go very well as the software is buggy.

Soon, I hope that many of these nagging issues will be sorted out; Phones will be available as well and then my family and friends will buy them and would avoid all the hassles that we've been facing till now :o(

I hope that we get some good meaningful update very soon...

I am seeing lag at the same interval as before... I assume most people reported it was gone because they had not paid regular attention to how long it took to surface/ manifest before.

Right I know this has probably been covered before and why we should have to do thisjust to send a text I dunno but if it starts lagging just hit the home buttton and then reopen the app.

It seems to do the trick with mail and SMS and plus side when u go back in it remembers where u left it.

Again I know it ain't real fx for the prob but beats trying to do what u wanna do with the lag, and ikniw some people have said lock and unlock ur phone but to be fair I dnt think that is as practicle.
Hope that helps some of u and u can't belive we have this problem in the first place I could undestand it if this was the first eva iPhone.

Mosher Morris,

I don't seemed to of been blessed by this better signal strength that most people seem to be reportin.

First of all, I should say that I have not yet upgraded to 2.0.1 here in France. But three days ago Orange/France upgraded their 3G network, when all their 3G customers (including non-iPhone users) were asked to turn off their phones and then reboot. After which the 3G signal strength is definitely improved on my 3G iPhone (still under 2.0).

This seems to suggest once again that the network/carrier is at least partially reponsible for some of the issues that many have been experiencing in the UK. (I was in Germany recently, far away from major cities and roaming on T-Mobile/Germany, where the 3G signal was strong in the centre of a medium-sized town but practically non-existent only some 3 km away.)

As for the lag on SMS/mail input, that's another issue that I have yet to experience even under 2.0.

BUT for text input in Safari, Safari used to crash on me every time I tried to sign in before posting to this forum. This problem went away, however, also following the Orange/France 3G upgrade, so... yet another hint that it really may be a network/carrier issue?

I agree, The keypad lag is terrible. We need something to fix it in an update. It doesn't do it all the time. But every now and again, but still annoying. Rebooting does nothing.
