Superdrive brand in newer MacBooks

Does anyone know if Apple is still installing Matshita drives in it's MacBooks? I have had many many problems with mine in the past (including the fact that it won't read hardly ANY newly released commercial DVDs, and has numerous burn errors with certain brands of DVD-R).

I'm thinking of buying 2 new macbooks (for myself and my wife) and giving my old one to one of my kids, but I'm hesitant to just buy them if they still have these matshita drives in them, because they're... well... take away the MAT and the A from their name and you get the point.

The brand of drive isn't listed anywhere in the specs, and even when contacting apple support, THEY can't seem to tell me what brand of drive is in the newest MacBooks.

Hi. 10 days ago I've bought my MacBook (Early 2008) and has a LG-GSA-S10N drive.
I've burned just a couple of Double Layers and CD and no problems.
Cheers.

Are you able to read new releases of commercial DVDs? (Any movie you've bought or rented that came out recently) That's been the biggest problem with the Matshita drives. For whatever reason, they can read most CDs, and most older DVDs. But if you put a newer commercially produced DVD (say, from the past 3 or 4 years) the drive whirrs for about a minute, and then ejects the disk. I'm hoping the drives used in the newer MacBooks will actually READ and MOUNT these disks.

Solved

I have the same problem with my Mac mini drive, like yours.
Newer printed (and recorded) DVD will eject after inserted.
This drive dies prematurely. I have several new original DVD (Dr. House MD) and MacBook reads them with no problems at all.
The workaround I've took for my Mini is an external USB DVD-RAM drive. Problem solved.
Matsushita drives are faulty. Pioneer drives also have bad comments. I hope my LG drive will live longer.

Sorry if my english is not too good.
Cheers

Hi,

After all the bad press the Matshita (aptly named?) superdrives have gotten, I just orered my MacBook with a combo drive. The combo drive is also from Matshita, but it burns CDs and plays DVDs without problems. I rarely feel a burning (pun intended) desire to make a DVD when I'm using my MacBook portable, so I bought a Sony DRU-120a DVD burner and put it in an ADS firewire box that sits on my desk at home. It cost less the price differential between the combo drive and auperdrive.

I know the slot loader is hipper than the pop-out drawer, but I wish Apple would switch to ISO form factor optical drives that other manufacturers use. It would be easier to replace a failed drive or upgrade the drive when bluray, or other new technology becomes commonly available.

Hi. I've seen two names for the company. Here in south america Matsushita is more known that Matshita. Acording to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsushita_Electric_Industrial_Co.
I think Matsushita is the right name.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers.
