iCal + SunBird
Posted: Aug 16, 2008 7:21 AM

Hi since iCal (2.x used in Tiger) doesn't have CalDav support, im forced to use SunBird from Mozzila for all my Tiger and XP Machines (Leopard Machines work fine). I have 4 groups created, all have their own calendars. I've managed to get SunBird working with Caldav (meaning that I can see events, and move events around), but at the moment I input a new event, CalDav doesn't take it. Nor does it show an error in Sunbird, it just accepts the event (but doesn't show it) neither does it show on the Leopard iCal (3.x). Oh and i Can create events and change it on Leopard without any problem

So Its really useless for all my non Leopard employees. What can I do?? -Except change them all to Leopard?!?-

Do you see anything in the server's access or error logs when SunBird tries to write data?

Note that I have been using Sunbird on a fairly regular basis to do testing and have not seen any major problems like this. It is worth pointing out that Sunbird is under pretty heavy development right now and it probably makes sense to track both the current dot release as well as nightly builds.

Hi Cyrus.
Actually no. There is no error comming from SunBird. It accepts the event without any warning, but doesn't show the event! I have the latest build, 0.8 (I think is the newest?). I don't know if I have already mentioned this, but i'm using Sunbird with remote calendars,

server address
http://mail.local:8008/calendars/groups/produccion.
(Mail: Server Name
Produccion: Name of a particular group.)

I'm actually quite desperate, maybe if i try principals instead of Calendars?!?

The /calendars/... path is the correct one for configuring Sunbird to access CalDAV calendars. Also, 0.9 will be the next release. Try with the latest nightly build of that and see what happens.

Also, can you try with a user calendar rather than a group calendar and see if that makes a difference?

Hey Cyruss,

Thanks for your help, but the thing is that I need to share the group calendars (I don't have much need for individual calendars). Also lets hope that the 0.9 build works properly.

Apart from this, how can I get a hold of the nightly build?

Helpful

Follow the nightly build instructions at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/download.html.

I am seeing the same thing on my group calendars. If you create an event i a group calendar in Sunbird (todays nightly build) it will not error or show anything on the sunbird calendar......but the new event can be found on a Leopard iCal client with no problems. Whether I create in iCal or in Sunbird, nothing shows up in Sunbird calendar.

BTW: Thank you Cyrus for all the information regarding this topic.

I guess I need to try with the latest Sunbird and see what happens. Are you just creating a very simple event?

Yes. Just selecting the New Event button and giving the event a name, verifying that the correct Calendar is chosen, then clicking on the Save & Close button.

Ive tried that but with no effect. If the calendar is on a network (local) it won't work, but if its on the client computer itself, it saves without any problem. So i'm not sure if its a problem with Sunbird, or Mac's CalDav (bc I know that Sunbird has worked for others in the past). Please help, as this is really defeating the purpose of having a mac server in the office. I really can't upgrade all my computers to Leopards simply for this reason.

I should also point out that I am referring to the Windows nightly of Sunbird, and not the Mac version. And now a new development: the same group calendar that Sunbird was connecting to is getting an error: "The calendar ogaracal is momentarily not available". It is still accessible from iCal clients both on the local network and via the internet, but now Sunbird can't get to it. I have made no changes to the server config, only installed the latest nightly build.

IT WORKS!!!! Just applied the 10.5.5 server update and now Windows Sunbird and Mac iCal clients can create and edit events in group calendars. Apple must've fixed it in iCal Server.

Thanks again for your help, Cyrus

Thought I'd pass on some helpful hints to those having trouble with basic setup of Sunbird.

First, you need to know what calendars to add to Sunbird. In iCal, doing a get-info on the calendar will get you started but not the whole way. It may show /calendars/__uids__/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2DEA7832034F/calendar/ or may show /calendars/__uids__/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2DEA7832034F/27C9FC5A-AF32-43A

When you enter the full calendar path into Sunbird you want to use the full path

http://<servername>:<calendarport>/calendars/users/<username>/<calendar name>
OR
http://<servername>:<calendarport>/calendars/__uids__/<guid>/<calendar name>

calendar port is 8008 by default.
either one will work. The trick is to make sure you know the full calendar name. The FIRST/default calendar setup for each user is called 'calendar', each successive one is given a unique ID. ICAL MAY NOT SHOW YOU THE FULL NAME!!!! In the above example, ical gave me 27C9FC5A-AF32-43A but what I really needed was 27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2BAA608D4074 .

Therefore in my case what I need to enter in Sunbird would be

(initial calendar)

http://myserver.com:8008/calendars/users/joe/calendar
or
http://myserver.com:8008/calendars/__uids__/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2DEA7832034F/calendar/

(additional calendar)

http://myserver.com:8008/calendars/users/joe/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2BAA608D4074/
or
http://myserver.com:8008/calendars/__uids__/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2DEA7832034F/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2BAA608D4074/

--
You can use the ical get-info for a reference and then find the full name by browsing your server http://myserver.com:8008, or mounting the volume under go->connect to server http://myserver.com:8008 In the /calendars/users/username section you'll see 'calendar' and any other calendar for that user such as 27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2BAA608D4074 in my case. Selecting that calendar shows the entire url in the link toolbar.

Setup your calendars in iCal and get their reference number, name them here for other mac users to see (if shared). Setup your deligates in ical etc. THEN use the above to get it setup in Sunbird. Hope this helps.
