It appears to have helped mine for just now. I did email tech support and this is the dialog. The last line is the important part for mine!
Maybe this info can help someone else!!
good luck.
Steven S: Welcome to the AT&T Data Support Live Chat! My name is Steven. I will be happy to assist with your iPhone.
Steven S: Sorry to hear you are having problems with your iPhone. How long have you had this device?
macman since the very first day. this is actually the 2nd phone.
Steven S: Since the first day iPhone 3G was released?
Macman yes sir
Steven S: What happened with the first model?
macman battery issues and a lot of crashing of apps etc.
Steven S: ok.
What kind of signal strength do you get with 3G?
macman 4-5 bars most places
macman Richmond va has great 3G network
Steven S: Do you keep your wifi active?
macman no
Steven S: ok. Does this happen in the same areas, or anywhere you go?
macman Pretty much all over Richmond. I have to switch to Edge network to surf
Steven S: ok. Go to 3G on your device for a moment.
macman OK
Steven S: ok. With it on 3G, reboot your device. Hold the power button down till prompted to turn off.
macman ok

Steven S: ok
macman started
Steven S: ok. Lets see how Safari is going right now.
macman got an error message saying safari could not find server?
Steven S: ok, thanks. It'll be just a moment.
Steven S: Just a moment longer. Updates are downloading to your phone.
macman thanks
seems better
Steven S: Good.
Steven S: Keep going..
macman certainly better than before. what was the update?
Steven S: LOL, I sent about 4 different updates into that phone, one of them told it what towers to connect to, I actually removed your sim card out of the system, and rebuilt your account, then reactivated it. There was a whole lot done in that first 8 minutes.

That maybe helpful for AT&T customers. Nothing can be done for O2 customers which is a shame.

Sorry to say but this did not help in the end! I thought things seemed better but a couple of hours later same problems again.
The last few days have been worse. I have to use the "edge" network most of the time because the 3G just hangs and hangs when on the Internet!
Why should I me paying for a 3G network if it is not working with this iPhone?
