Installation hangs in early stage (around networking setup)
Posted: Sep 2, 2008 5:22 PM

I am installing for the first time on a brand new Mac mini. With or without the installation CD inserted, several screens appear (keyboard identification, Welcome screen, language) and then I am prompted to select a wireless network; I select mine, enter the password, the screen briefly indicates success, then shows the message "Configuring the computer...", after which it hangs with the spinning beach ball. This is repeatable.

I have isolated the network issues by trying to continue the installation without networking, and get basically the same issue.

I have tried starting the computer with the "C" key pressed down and the Installation Disk 1 inserted, but the screen asking me to identify the keyboard comes up first.

I am using a PC keyboard and mouse connected with a Belkin USB-to-PS2 adapter (Sorry, I don't have any USB keyboards or Mac keyboards available :-).

Any suggestions?

Thanks --

Tom

Helpful

I'd really really really try a USB keyboard. The PS2 to USB adapter may not be supported. A quick Google suggested as much. You may want to try a more extensive search.OS X supports a wide variety of USB devices...PS2, well, not so much.

G3's to Intels and everything in between.   Mac OS X (10.5)   Still supporting 9.x to 10.x

Ok, so I bought a USB KB and Mouse and was able to press the "C" key to force installation from the DVD. The complete OSX installation proceeded ... then I got back to the same condition:

After the welcome screen, language and country selection, and starting after selecting my wireless network, the screen remains, with the message "Configuring your computer..."

I can hear that the hard drive is spinning, and it seems to be doing something: by putting my ear up to the box, I can hear an occasional disk read or write. But the machine has been in this state for a long time (last night we left it running like this for over an hour), and it appears to be doing the same thing today.

The fact the the OS installed suggests the disk is fine. Is there a way to run any command line diagnostics of the system (without having a full OS boot completed)? Can I boot a basic unix prompt from one of the DVDs or in some other way?

Update: I found http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2818/os_x_ten_boot_options_for_leopard and will try these, but several are a combination of cmd + a key; on a Windows/PC keyboard, which key should I use.

And the real question is, what can I do once I am at a prompt (assuming a pretty good knowledge of Unix, and a reasonable understanding of OS X)?

Thanks

Tom

I wonder if the problem is that you successfully connect to the wifi router but wind up not getting an IP address. (This is an issue with some wifi routers.) I'd have thought you'd get a timeout message eventually though, so I'm a bit puzzled. Then again, I'm puzzled by the entire thing. Can you connect via Ethernet cable?

Harrumph. So after another try, this time with the same "no network" option I chose before the installation continued (previously it did not). And then everything worked ... including that the wireless connection was all set up (even after selecting the no network option.

So I guess I let it run long enough the second time that it got enough info to remember the network setup, and then when I hard booted again it had enough to continue past where it failed the first time. Perhaps it would have timed-out with an error if I had waited another hour, but I didn't, and suppose I just got lucky.

So in the end, the problem had nothing to do with the Belkin Serial-to-USB mouse connection, but instead seems likely to be some anomaly with my wireless router (total guess) ... which happens to be one of the most common routers sold (Linksys WRT54G) with pretty simple settings.

This was a pretty bad "out of box" experience, if anyone from Apple is listening.

Thanks to those who helped.

Installation hung after selecting wireless network. After numerous tries, selecting the option for No Networking allowed installation to continue (this didn't work the first time) and all was well.

No, Apple isn't listening here - go to Apple.com/feedback - they listen there.
