3G & EDGE Data Service

Has anyone else today had problems accessing AT&T's 3G and EDGE data networks? I have full service, and the 3G/EDGE icon is appearing, however I cannot get on the internet, check email, use apps store or anything else that requires data service.

Same problem. Voicemail works though (which I think uses Edge/3G network). I rebooted (hard and soft), synced w/ my computer, cleared cache, cleared history...and nothing got me back on the internet.

I'm in Baltimore and have been having connection problems on 3g for a day or two. This morning Edge is also not working. All call functions are working properly. I was on the AT&T network forum and see people reporting the same issue, many in the D.C. area. This must be a northeast issue.

Well I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one.
I guess it must be on AT&T's side, and not my iPhone.
I just tried upgrading to 2.0.2 (since I hadn't done it yet) but that didn't resolve the issue either.

I stay in Singapore and just purchased a 3G iphone over the weekend. The first thing I noticed was the 3G signal kept dropping when I was at home and reverting to a normal 2G signal on the 3G iphone. When I called Singtel the network operator, they told me to upgrade the phone firmware to version 2.0.2 which should resolve this. I did this and still had the same problem, anyone knows how to overcome this problem? I used to use a Nokia N95 and it was always on the 3G signal when I was at home....

Same issue here (mid-town Manhattan) - no Edge / 3G connectivity although full 5 bars of signal on Edge (I have 3G turned off because it is pretty much useless until fixed).
Can't be the entire network as I have my BB Pearl sitting next to the iPhone with full bars of signal on Edge and data connectivity is not an issue - both email and web are working at regular speeds on the BB

No data service today as I travel between Central NJ and NYC.
It's been spotty for the last two weeks.

Does anyone think maybe the downtime is to perform an upgrade, since apparently it is only iPhone ATT users experiencing this?
At least if they are doing that maybe we'll begin to get what we're paying for -- but some advance notice would have been nice.

It's not only iPhones. It's many smartphones (e.g. Tilt, etc.) as well as wireless broadband cards. It's a server issue, though, and because Blackberry data is passed through RIM's servers, BBs are still working on AT&T's network.

UK O2 customer here and I have no Edge/3G data access either. At least as far as web browsing is concerned. I can turn on WiFi and access the Internet that way though. I can also pick up my e-mails so POP/IMAP is working. Just not HTTP. I'm seriously considering going back to 2.01 because at least that was working. Also GPS is screwed yet again.

Montgomery County, Maryland area - was down all morning. It is back up now. Both 3G and Edge.
I called ATT Wireless Internet support, waited 24 minutes, then was dumped into the iPhone support queue at the smallest mention that I am an iPhone user. Had to wait another 20 or so minutes after that. iPhone support told me that an outage was reported this morning from Texas and to the east of that. That's something that ATT could have told me.
When I am connected to Wifi at home (Comcast), the iPhone is spectacular! Streaming flawlessly. But when on 3G network, in most cases slower than Edge. In all cases, choppy and unreliable.
ATT is sabotaging the iPhone (either intentionally or unintentionally). ATT can't deliver on their end what iPhone promises (more affordable, twice as fast).
But it is back up now. When is ATT going to straighten out their 3G network?????!!!!

I just switched over from SprintPCS and purchased a brand new iPhone 3G running the latest 2.0.2 sw. I must admit, the phone is great but service is terrible to say the least - and it's not entirely AT&T's fault here.
I have a BlackBerry Pearl with AT&T also and tried both of them sitting side by side (in Central NJ) trying to load Google. Both devices show the same # of service bars.
The BlackBerry on Edge loaded within 3 seconds while the iPhone (in 3G) sat pretty spinning away then finally throwing "backend not responding" in Safari.
I switched the iPhone to the Edge network and same behavior. This clearly isn't an AT&T issue as both the BlackBerry AND the iPhone are both running on AT&T edge. The Berry responded within seconds and the iPhone timed out consistently. The silence from Apple on this issue is creepy! This could make for an interesting YouTube video.
Now, I'm in lower Manhattan and the 3G and Edge services are running intermittently.
Has anyone else encountered this behavior? Has there been any word from Apple on this? Should I bail on the iPhone 3G as being busted? I just signed up for the new contract + phone 5 days ago and haven't been able to go online with it much at all (except when on WiFi).

Hopefully your issue is resolved at this point. There was a data server outage his morning on the AT&T side affecting smartphones and wireless broadband cards for laptops (i.e., nothing to do with Apple or the iPhone), but the outage seems to have ended around noon EDT. Note that BBs were not affected, since their data is proxied through RIM's servers, not sent directly through AT&T's servers.
