Cannot update apps because the store is 'temporarily unavailable'
Posted: Sep 5, 2008 2:29 AM

I just seem to have found another (but different) app store error.

The indicator on my iPhone says I have one app to update but when I go to the store on my phone it says one of to things, either the store is temporarily unavailable or that it couldn't connect to the store. However I can still browse other parts of the store (charts, search, featured etc.).

Tellingly once in the app store the 'update' button doesn't have the usual indicator on it telling me there is an app to update. Anyone had this problem? Is this a temporary server side issue?

Thanks,

Adam

I've had this message many times, it's either because my connection is a bit dodgy or, more likely, because there is some update process going on at the other end. It normally sorts itself out in a short space of time so the thing to do is to keep checking it as it should be just a temporary issue.

This is happening to me. Here's what's going on.

I open the App Store on my iPhone 3G. I can browse apps via any of the "Tabs" at the bottom of the screen. However, when I click the "Update" tab, the "Loading..." message appears and then quickly after that I get a message that states: "The iTunes store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

I know this this is not true because:

1) I can browse the store via the other tabs and through iTunes on my comptuer 2) my friend who sits next to me at work, and who also has an iPhone 3G, can get updates. When I just asked him to check, he had updates available which he downloaded and installed without a problem.

This problem has existed for 3 to 4 days now. This is not an issue of the store doing maintenance on their end or something like that. It's a problem on my iPhone.

I have already had to restore this entire phone 2 times. I am not very happy about the prospect of having to do it all again. Please, please, please tell me there is something I can do to fix this without a restore.

I have tried to connect to the store on Edge, 3G, and multiple different Wi-Fi networks (work, home, free wi-fi at a restaurant).

Thanks!
Bob

I am pretty sure it is a problem with the iTunes store. I do not get updates for my apps from iTunes either. I can download and install new apps, but not update existing ones. Hopefully, within a few daus this will be sorted out.

There does seem to be something going wrong. For several days, I appear to have 7 updates available but when I try to get them it tells me there are no updates. Earlier, I checked for updates in the help menu and nothing came up but when I clicked on the arrow telling me I had those 7 updates it took me to the update apps window in iTunes and showed me I had 3 updates ready to download.

OK, wow... so that one guy got in and downloaded updates. Now, another guy just got here and he tried with the same result I get. Both of us tried on 3G and Edge. Now the original guy is having the same problem.

Sorry, guess it is a problem with the store... not sure why the one guy had success when I haven't been able to get there for a few days.

Thanks,
Bob

There does seem to be a fault with the iTunes app store at the moment. I couldn't download one of my apps as it said it wasn't available in the UK anymore. When I tried to search the app store, I couldn't view the last page of both productivity and utilities - I keep getting that "we couldn't complete your request, the itunes store is not available" message. This means it's probably got nothing to do with the type of connection anyone's got, perhaps the gremlins have got in.

I have the same issue. When I open the app store, and click the update button on the bottom of the screen, it displays the "itunes currently unavailable" message. It seems that it is an issue on Apple's end.

Okay - well at least it sounds fairly universal... Like some others I've done enough restores and the fact that I lose a few settings everytime (and it takes two hours) drives me nuts, more of that I can do without.

I'll sit tight and see what happens. It would be good to know if anyone here gets a resolution, I'll post back if I do.

Just out of curiosity.. do any of you with the app store problems have Twitterrific installed on your phones??

I've noticed that today, any searches I do in iTunes (on my desktop mac) for twitter, twitterrific, etc. always come back with an error message, but searches for other apps come back fine. Same thing on my iphone. My updates button on the phone give the "store unavailable" message, browsing for apps works fine, but also, searching for twitterrific usually gives a "no match found" result. (even when it does give a search result for twitterrific, clicking on it gives the same no match found result.)

I can see and click on twitterrific if i manually browse the social networking category, but otherwise, that one app is giving me issues.

It does seem to be limited to certain apps. I have got twitter but I know there isn't an update out for that yet. This may explain my problem with WritingPad - I was told there was an update available for it but then got a message saying it wasn't available in the UK store. When I went to search in Productivity and Utilities, I couldn't view the last page of apps when I sorted by name. I hope this is sorted soon - I've already sent an email to the dev of WritingPad to ask why it was pulled, perhaps it has just vanished into some iTunes black hole.
